Leatherback turtles can grow to the size of a double bed and weigh more than a ton. Air-breathers, they can dive more than a kilometer into the sea, and ocean-dwellers, they can maintain body temperatures as high as 18 degrees C above the surrounding water temperature. They mostly eat only jellyfish, although they have also been known to feed on squid, mollusks, fish and sea urchins. They are born in South and Central America, are the world’s largest reptile and one of its most mysterious. They are the only species representing a family that has been around for more than a million years. It is an extremely endangered species and every nest, every egg, each hatchling, juvenile and adult is important for the continuing existence of this magnificent animal.

Leatherbacks can live upward of 150 years. Most don't however, due to threats against their survival – the majority of which are due to mankind. The most common causes of death at sea are gill netting, longline fishing and shrimp trawling. Ingestion of plastic, which may look like jellyfish to a turtle, will obstruct its digestion system, causing it to die of starvation. Net entanglement usually leads to death by drowning. Many turtles have died due to entrapment in marine debris such as plastic sheeting, nylon ropes and fishing lines torn from boats and left to float at the sea's surface.

If a female leatherback can live to the age of 7 to 15, she will begin to breed. When she is ready to lay eggs, she will, ideally, return to the beach of her own birth, haul herself ashore and slowly make her way to an area she feels is safe enough for a nest. Using her front flippers she makes a pit, and then uses her back flippers to make a deeper cavity in which to deposit her 60-120 eggs, called a clutch. When the eggs have been laid, she covers the nest again and, after wandering around a bit presumably to confuse predators, heads back to sea. The whole process takes up to two hours, almost always late at night. She will only nest every two or three years, making an average of six nests between March and August. The eggs will hatch in about two months.

When a baby turtle is ready to hatch, it uses a temporary egg tooth to crack its eggshell open. Usually, the entire nest hatches almost at once, so there is a little protection in numbers. If not scooped up by gulls, dogs, raccoons, ghost crabs, coatis, vultures and hawks, they have a chance to reach the sea, where from then on their lives will be threatened by large fish, sharks, octopi, killer whales, and man. It is estimated that less than 2% of each clutch survives the nesting and the short trip to the sea.

The males never again return to land. The females will do so only to nest.

The world population of leatherbacks has declined by more than 75% in the last 20 years. On one important nesting beach in Mexico, there were 6,500 nests recorded in 1986, but only 50 by 1993. It is estimated that less than 34,000 females of nesting age exist in the world today. Faced with these alarming statistics, naturalists around the globe have called for total protection of the leatherback turtles, with their primary focus being the safeguarding of their nests and nesting beaches.

For years, CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), Greenpeace, EarthWatch, WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and dozens of other conservation organizations have all been working to increase public knowledge and awareness of the plight of endangered species, including leatherbacks and other sea turtles. More organizations, such as The Honu Project, Save Our Leatherbacks, Turtles.org and Free the Leatherbacks, were formed exclusively in attempts to save the declining sea turtle populations.

Panama has signed numerous international treaties in a show of concern for this important natural resource. In signing such agreements, the country expressed its commitment to protect sea turtle nesting habitats, monitor sea turtle mortality and nesting activities. One article of the IELP Treaty goes so far as to say that if violations are occurring at nesting beaches, "This Agreement makes clear that citizens have the right to enforce the provisions of this Agreement."

With so much of the world, including Panama, trying to protect sea turtles and their nesting habitats, it was astonishing to Bocas residents that a "Survivor"-type television show from Colombia, called "Desafio" ("Challenge" in English), was erecting towers, ramps and large platforms (one turned out to be a heliport!) for its "games" right on the sands of Bluff Beach. Not only is this one of the most popular beaches in Bocas, it is the nesting ground of several species of sea turtles and the set was being erected in the middle of the leatherbacks' nesting season. Fresh nests were being made nightly, some between the structures, some beside them, and a few days later it was observed that one structure had been built on top of a nest dug the previous night.

What followed were outraged residents' numerous trips to Mayor Jose "Dr. Joe" Anderson's office, photographs and petitions sent to various Panamanian officials and organizations, postings on FaceBook and YouTube, and finally, on the first day of the show's filming, a physical protest at the site, with about 25 participants disrupting the show's "opening ceremony." The police and sheriff were ordered out to the set to stop the protestors but there was a dilemma. All beaches in Panama are public, meaning the protestors had every right to be on the beach, regardless of issued permits. And nobody had the right to order them off. Many of the protestors, however, knew Sheriff José Acuña personally, and politely stated their case, then allowed him to explain his. Everyone left the beach after the two-hour demonstration when the sheriff said the mayor would welcome everyone to another meeting in his office the following day.

It would be nice to report that after that meeting the show's producers, directors, crew and contestants moved their location as quickly as possible. But this wasn't the case. While they were actually willing to move to an area of the beach where no turtles are nesting (the sand mining area, where the sand has been mined down to the fossilized coral), they were not issued permits for that location because that area is now being "protected."

As this paper was going to press, a week and a half after the protest and subsequent meeting, the show is still being filmed but they now are using TWO large stretches of Bluff Beach, all of which is the turtles' nesting territory.

We don’t know how much harm has been done to the eggs in the nests already in place before the film crew came. We can't predict how many more are still being harmed with the construction and activity. The turtles will continue to attempt nesting through August however.

Or maybe not. They may just give up and go away for good.

That would make a few very greedy people very happy.

Tortugas críticamente en peligro son “desafiadas”

Las tortugas canal pueden crecer al tamaño de una cama doble y pesar más de una tonelada. Al respirar a través del aire, ellas pueden nadar más de un kilómetro en el mar, y al vivir en el océano, pueden mantener la temperatura de su cuerpo a 18 grados C sobre la temperatura del agua que las rodea. Ellas se alimentan principalmente de aguavivas, aunque también se sabe que pueden comer calamares, moluscos, peces y erizos de mar. Ellas nacen en Sudamérica y Centroamérica y son los reptiles más grandes del mundo y los más misteriosos. Es una especie extremadamente en peligro y cada nido, cada huevo, cada incubación, joven y adulto es importante para la continuidad de la existencia de este magnífico animal.

Las tortugas canal pueden vivir hasta 150 años. Aunque la mayoría no llega a esa edad debido a las amenazas contra su supervivencia (la mayoría gracias a la humanidad). Las causas más comunes de muerte en el mar son las redes, la pesca y las redes de arrastre. La ingesta de plástico, el cual puede parecer una aguaviva para las tortugas, obstruye el sistema digestivo, causando la muerte de la tortuga por hambre. El enredarse con las redes usualmente lleva a que se mueran ahogadas. Muchas tortugas han muerto a causa de encontrarse atrapadas en desperdicios marinos, tales como plásticos, telas de nylon y cuerdas para la pesca que caen de los botes y quedan flotando en la superficie del mar.

Si una hembra canal puede vivir entre los 7 y los 15 años, ella puede comenzar la reproducción. Cuando ella está lista para poner huevos, ella podrá idealmente volver a la playa de su propio nacimiento, arrastrarse a tierra y, lentamente, dirigirse a un área donde se sienta lo suficientemente segura para anidar. Ella realiza un hoyo utilizando sus aletas frontales y luego utiliza sus aletas traseras para cavar más profundo y depositar sus 60-120 huevos, denominado nidada. Cuando los huevos han sido puestos, ella cubre nuevamente el nido y después de andar por los alrededores, supuestamente, para confundir a los depredadores, se dirige de vuelta al mar. Todo el proceso toma dos horas, usualmente tarde en la noche. Ella anidará sólo cada dos o tres años, con un promedio de seis nidos entre marzo y agosto. Los huevos incubarán en dos meses aproximadamente.

Cuando una tortuga bebé está lista para salir, utiliza un diente temporal del huevo para romper la cáscara. Usualmente, el nido entero rompe al mismo tiempo, por lo que hay poca protección en números. Si no son capturados por las gaviotas, los perros, los mapaches, los cangrejos fantasma, los coaties, los gallinazos y los halcones, tienen la oportunidad de alcanzar el mar, donde desde entonces sus vidas van a estar amenazadas por los grandes peces, tiburones, pulpos, ballenas asesinas y el hombre. Se estima que menos del 2% de cada nidada sobrevive a la anidación y al corto viaje hacia el mar.

Los machos nunca más vuelven a tierra. Las hembras sólo lo hacen para anidar.

La población mundial de tortugas canal ha disminuido más de un 75% en los últimos 20 años. En una importante playa de anidación en México, hubo un record de 6,500 nidos en 1986, pero en 1993 hubo sólo 50. Se estima que menos de 34,00 hembras en edad de anidación existen en el mundo hoy en día. Enfrentando estas alarmantes estadísticas, los naturalistas alrededor del mundo han hecho un llamado por una total protección de las tortugas canal, con su principal enfoque en salvaguardar sus nidos y sus playas de anidación.

Por años, CITES (siglas en inglés para la Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Fauna y Flora Silvestres), Greenpeace, EarthWatch, WWF (Fundación de la Vida Silvestre Mundial) y docenas de otras organizaciones para la conservación han estado trabajando para aumentar el conocimiento y la conciencia pública de la difícil situación de las especies en peligro, incluyendo las tortugas canal y otras tortugas marinas. Más organizaciones, como El Proyecto Honu, Salva Nuestras Tortugas Canal, Turtles.org y Libera a las Tortugas Canal, fueron formadas exclusivamente para intentar salvar la declinante población de tortugas marinas.

Panamá ha firmado numerosos tratados internacionales como muestra de su preocupación por este importante recurso natural. Al firmar dichos acuerdos, el país expresa su compromiso para proteger los hábitats de anidación de las tortugas marinas, monitorear la mortalidad de las mismas y las actividades de anidación. Un artículo del Tratado IELP va tan lejos diciendo que si las violaciones están ocurriendo en playas de anidación, “Este Tratado deja en claro que los ciudadanos tienen el derecho de hacer cumplir las provisiones de este Acuerdo”.

Con tanto en el mundo, incluyendo a Panamá, tratando de proteger a las tortugas marinas y sus hábitats de anidación, es sorprendente para los residentes de Bocas que un programa de televisión estilo “Survivor” de Colombia, denominado “Desafío” esté construyendo sus torres, rampas y grandes plataformas (una terminó siendo un helipuerto) para sus juegos en las arenas de Playa Bluff. No sólo esta es una de las playas más populares en Bocas, sino que también es el sitio de anidación de varias especies de tortugas marinas y el set estaba siendo construido en plena temporada de anidación de las tortugas canal. Frescos nidos se estaban haciendo en la noche, algunos entre las estructuras, algunos al lado de ellas y unos días después se observó que una estructura había sido construida sobre un hoyo de un nido la noche anterior.

Aquellos que participaron de la reunión dijeron que el alcalde fue amable, se le informó sobre las violaciones que estaban ocurriendo en el sitio y se disculpó porque el programa de televisión no había sido supervisado más de cerca. Solicitó sugerencias y se le dieron varias.

Hubiera sido bueno reportar que después de esa reunión los productores del programa, directores, equipo y participantes se mudaron a otro lugar tan rápido como fuera posible. Pero este no fue el caso. Mientras ellos estaban dispuestos a mudarse a otra área de la playa donde no había tortugas anidando (el área de extracción de arena, donde la arena ha sido extraída hasta los corales fosilizados), no se les dieron los permisos para esa ubicación porque esa área es ahora “protegida”.

Al momento que este periódico estaba camino a prensa, una semana y media después de la protesta y las siguientes reuniones, el programa de televisión todavía está siendo filmado, pero ahora están utilizando DOS grandes tramos de Playa Bluff, los cuales son territorio de anidación de las tortugas.

No sabemos cuánto daño se ha causado a los huevos en los nidos que ya estaban ubicados antes de que llegase el equipo de filmación. No podemos predecir cuántos más están siendo dañados con la construcción y la actividad. Sin embargo, las tortugas continuarán intentando anidar en agosto.

O quizás no. Puede que se rindan y se vayan para siempre.

Esto hará a un par de personas muy codiciosas muy felices.

Note from the editor

The sand mining at Bluff Beach has been stopped. Bocas Mayor Jose "Dr. Joe" Anderson issued a decree last month that no more sand can be taken from this fragile area. We applaud the Municpio's decision to protect what has been so flagrantly abused throughout the years.

Other good news: There is less trash on the streets, thanks to a conscientious Municipio street crew. Thank you, City Employees: you are doing a wonderful job!

Handicapped ramps are being created on street corners (a first for Bocas).

School children are increasingly aware of trash problems on the islands and make up the largest group of activists in organized town and beach clean-ups.

There are many positive things to report in these islands but these can't offset the negative actions, such as allowing television crews to build sets and play "games" on endangered turtle nesting sites.

La extracción de arena en Playa Bluff se ha detenido. El mes pasado, el Alcalde de Bocas José “Joe” Anderson emitió un decreto que dice que no se puede extraer más arena de este frágil área. Aplaudimos la decisión del Municipio que protege lo que se ha abusado tan descaradamente a través de los años.

Otra buena noticia: hay menos basura en las calles gracias al consciente equipo del municipio. Gracias a los empleados del Municipio: están haciendo un maravilloso trabajo.

Se están construyendo rampas para discapacitados en las esquinas de las calles (por primera vez en Bocas).

Los alumnos de las escuelas están siendo más conscientes de los problemas de la basura en las islas y han creado el grupo más grande de activistas para la limpieza del pueblo y las playas.

Hay muchas cosas positivas que informar en estas islas, pero estas no pueden compensar las negativas, tales como el permitir que un equipo de televisión construya los sets y juegue “juegos” en sitios donde anidan las tortugas.

Letters of outrage from around the world / Cartas de indignación de todas partes del mundo

As someone who has been involved in sea turtle conservation for over twenty years (many of them working with the Caribbean Conservation Corp), I am disgusted by the fact that we are allowing "Desafio" to film on one of our prime nesting beaches during nesting season. This lack of forethought can only further threaten the endangered leatherbacks and hawksbills and the already threatened loggerheads.
Many people are not aware that sea turtles return to the same beaches year after year to nest. Having film sets on the beach can discourage these turtles from nesting. Sometimes they simply deposit their eggs in the sea (where the eggs are not viable).
Lights on the beach can draw the hatchlings towards the lights and away from the ocean, which increases the chances of them falling victim to predators or dying of dehydration.
Human activity on the beach can damage nests, sometimes making it impossible for the hatchlings to reach the surface. They are, in effect, buried alive.
Perhaps this is only a short-term problem, because if we continue to mine sand from our beaches we will no longer have to worry about nesting sea turtles OR the filming of "reality" shows, as we will no longer have the beautiful beaches that we so enjoy.

Como persona que ha participado en la conservación de tortugas marinas por más de veinte años (muchos de los cuales he trabajado con la Corporación Caribeña para la Conservación), estoy indignado por el hecho de que estamos permitiendo que “Desafío” filme en una de nuestras principales playas de anidación durante la temporada de anidación. Esta falta de previsión sólo puede amenazar aún más las tortugas canal y las careys y las que ya se encuentran en peligro, las caguamas.
Muchas personas no saben que las tortugas marinas regresan a las mismas playas año tras año para anidar. El tener sets de filmación en la playa puede desalentar a las tortugas a que aniden. Algunas veces, ellas simplemente depositan sus huevos en el mar (donde los huevos no son viables).
Las luces en la playa pueden guiar a los bebés hacia las luces y lejos del océano, lo cual aumenta las posibilidades de ser víctimas de los depredadores o de morir por deshidratación.
La actividad humana en la playa puede dañar a los nidos, algunas veces haciendo imposible que los bebés alcancen la superficie. Ellos son, en efecto, enterrados en vida.
Quizás, este es sólo un problema a corto plazo, porque si continuamos extrayendo arena de nuestras playas no nos tendremos que preocupar por la anidación de las tortugas marinas O por la filmación de reality shows, ya que no tendremos las hermosas playas que tanto disfrutamos.

I, along with many others, I'm sure, would like to speak out against the filming of "Desafio" at Bluff Beach or any beach during any nesting season. I am an occasional visitor to Bluff Beach - all I take are pictures and all I leave are footprints.
Please do all you can to prevent this filming. Sure, it will bring money into the community in the near future, but ruining the beach and nesting for the turtles will have a long-time effect: loss of revenue over many, many years! People will quit coming to this beach due to its ravaging and loss of turtles.

Yo, junto con muchos otros, estoy seguro, quisiera hablar en contra de la filmación de “Desafío” en Playa Bluff o en cualquier playa durante la temporada de anidación. Soy un visitante ocasional de la playa Bluff, todo lo que tomo son fotos y todo lo que dejo son huellas.
Por favor, hagan todo lo que tengan que hacer para detener esta filmación. Seguro, traerá dinero a la comunidad en el futuro cercano, pero el arruinar la playa y los nidos de las tortugas tendrá un efecto a largo plazo: la falta de ingresos por muchos, muchos años. Outraged to hear that "Desafio" is filming on Bluff beach bocas del Toro when it is a known turtle nesting ground, and turtles are nesting there nightly.
There are many other locations that could be used for this type of show; you should research the environmental impact of your filming on the locations you are shooting before you go and film there. This is appalling and outrageous.

Estoy indignada de escuchar que “Desafío” está filmando en Playa Bluff de Bocas del Toro cuando es una conocida playa de anidación de tortugas y las tortugas están anidando allí en la noche.

To whom it may concern,
I am outraged at the decision to allow filming of a "reality show" on Bluff Beach. The reality is that without the human conscious decision to protect the environment, we are contributing to the demise of marine resources in this area.
As a marine conservation coordinator in Costa Rica, I find it disturbing that local governers willingly allow the desecration of a turtle nesting habitat, whilst at the same time, projects in Bocas del Toro are desperate to recruit paying international volunteers to help in their fight to protect one of the oldest species on earth.
This kind of human interaction around nesting beaches can only result in a negative impact on future turtle populations – and as all species nesting in Caribbean areas of Latin America are now listed on the CITES endangered animals list , I am shocked that this has been allowed o happen in one of the prime tourist areas in Panama.
Not only is any construction, or disturbance of sand fatal for existing nests, but other factors including noise, sound and light pollution, contamination, and removal of vegetation can alter the nesting habits of mature females for years to come.
Is this really the legacy that local governers want to leave for future generations?
When the world is very aware of environmental issues, this decision stinks of corruption

Estoy horrorizada por la decisión que han tomado que permite la filmación de un reality show en Playa Blluff. La realidad es que sin una decisión humana consciente para proteger el ambiente, estamos contribuyendo con la desaparición de recursos marinos en esta área.
Como coordinadora de conservación marina en Costa Rica, encuentro esto muy perturbador que oficiales locales del gobierno permitan la profanación de un hábitat de anidación de tortugas, lo cual, al mismo tiempo, los proyectos en Bocas del Toro están desesperados para recrutar pagando a voluntarios internacionales que ayuden con su pelea para proteger una de las más antiguas especies en la tierra.
Esta clase de interacción humana alrededor de playas de anidación sólo puede resultar en un impacto negativo en las futuras poblaciones de tortugas – ya que todas las especies que anidan en áreas caribeñas de América Latina son parte de la lista de animales en peligro de extinción en CITES (siglas en inglés para la Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Fauna y Flora Silvestres) y estoy sorprendida que esto haya sido permitido u ocurra en una de las principales áreas turísticas de Panamá.
No sólo cualquier construcción o alteración de arena son fatales para los nidos existentes, sino otros factores que incluyen la contaminación de ruido, sonora y de iluminación y la extracción de la vegetación pueden alterar los hábitats de anidación de las hembras maduras en los años venideros.
¿Es este el legado que los gobernantes locales quieren dejar a las futuras generaciones?
Cuando el mundo está muy consciente de los problemas ambientales, esta decisión huele a corrupción.

To Whomever it May Concern,
The idea and notion is simple. If you allow humans to intrude upon, and disrupt nature especially during its reproduction period, there will be a loss of existence. That loss of existence leads to loss of revenue for the town. When there is nothing left to see, the people will not come. That means there will be no more money.
If the town does not care about these issues, and only the bottom dollar so be it. But the bottom dollar wont last very long when every beautiful sight is ruined if it is not protected, respected, and cared for.
This is Panamanian land, and beautiful while it is breathtaking, it will not last if we keep letting people come in and act irresponsibly. What a large footprint it would be if a television crew for a moronic show ruins the breathtaking beauty of the turtles. Shame on us, and shame on whomever it is that CAN stop this and HAS NOT.
I join this petition and say NO to this catastrophe in the making.

La idea y noción es simple. Si permites a los humanos ser intrusos y afectar a la naturaleza, especialmente durante la temporada de reproducción, habrá una pérdida de existencia. Esa pérdida de existencia lleva a una pérdida de ingresos al pueblo. Cuando ya no haya nada que ver, las personas no vendrán. Eso significa que no habrá más dinero.
Si el pueblo no se preocupa por estos problemas y toma los riesgos asociados, que así sea. Pero esto no durará mucho tiempo cuando cada hermoso lugar esté arruinado si no es protegido, respetado y si no le dan importancia.
Esta es tierra panameña y es hermosa, pero no durará si seguimos permitiendo que la gente venga y actúe irresponsablemente. Qué gran huella será si un equipo de televisión para un tonto programa arruina la belleza de las tortugas. Qué verguenza para ustedes y para los que PUEDEN detener esto y NO LO HAN HECHO.
Me uno a esta petición y digo NO a esta catástrofe.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN... (and hopefully it will concern a lot of people!) As an ex-resident of Bocas del Toro, I am horrified at the photographs I have seen of the construction of the "Desafio" sets on Bluff beach. This beach is a well-known nesting site for leatherback, green and loggerhead turtles, all of which are considered endangered or critically endangered on an international level. Turtles are disturbed by both light and noise, and will therefore avoid laying their eggs anywhere on this beach. Given that sea turtles always return to the same beach to nest, it is not likely that they will simply look for other, more appropriate nesting sites, thus bringing them even closer to extinction.
It seems from the photographs that several nests may have already been disturbed, the eggs destroyed. I can not believe that this has been allowed simply to produce a piece of "entertainment", and I wonder if the viewers would find it so entertaining if they knew the horrendous destruction that was caused in order for this TV show to be broadcast.
So many people on these islands work together to preserve and protect this amazing ecosystem, and it is incredible that years of good work can be entirely undone in just a few short weeks of filming. Please put a stop to this NOW.

A QUIEN CONCIERNE… (y espero que concierna a muchas personas) Como ex residente de Bocas del Toro, estoy horrorizada por las fotografías que he visto de la construcción del set de “Desafío” en playa Bluff. Esta playa es muy conocida como un sitio de anidación de las tortugas canal, verdes y las cahuamas, que son consideradas en peligro de extinción a nivel internacional. A las tortugas las molestan tanto la luz como el ruido y, por lo tanto, dejarán de colocar sus huevos en esta playa. Dado que las tortugas marinas siempre vuelven a la misma playa para anidar, no es probable que simplemente busquen otra playa más apropiada para anidar, lo que causará aún más su extinción.
Parece por las fotografías que varios nidos ya hayan sido perturbados, habiendo destruido sus huevos. No puedo creer que esto haya sido permitido simplemente para producir un “entretenimiento” y me pregunto si los televidentes lo encontrarán entretenido si supieran la horrenda destrucción que fue causada para que se transmita este programa de televisión.
Muchas personas en estas islas trabajan juntas para preservar y proteger este maravilloso ecosistema y es increíble que años de buen trabajo se puedan destruir en unas pocas semanas de filmación. Por favor, detengan esto AHORA.

The best publicity what you can get on the eyes of a foreigner is your pure nature and willingness to protect it as much as you can. Don't let anything like television filming destroy it. Your actions imply that your sole interest is financial. What a shame. Your program has an amazing opportunity to introduce millions of viewers to the unspoiled areas of the world and to promote preservation of our amazing ecology. Pleases re-think your priorities and take advantage of your position to make a positive impact on the future of our globe.

Please take the time to visit the turtle research center in Bocas del Toro and learn more about the amazing creatures that make their nests on Bluff Beach and other beaches in the area. Bocas del Toro es un destino turístico que es conocido y promovido por su belleza natural y cultura caribeña.
La experiencia debe haberle enseñado a la comunidad y a todos los accionistas involucrados que los turistas dejan de llegar si la belleza natural no existe más.
Es muy difícil pensar que la comunidad y las autoridades permiten que este “reality show” construya su set en el medio de un lugar donde las tortugas ponen sus huevos en la temporada de anidación sin permisos, pero peor: sin consciencia o respeto para con las políticas de conservación de una especie que se encuentra en peligro de extinción. A pesar de que en Costa Rica hemos cometido errores, estamos sorprendidos de que esto esté ocurriendo en el 2010, mientras las autoridades sólo observan. Como me dijo un guía local de la comunidad de Puerto Jiménez la semana pasada:
"Si no hay animales, entonces no habrá turistas."

Bocas del Toro is a tourist destination that is known and promoted because of its natural beauty and Caribbean culture.
Experience must have taught the community and all stakeholders involved that tourists stop arriving if natural beauty no longer exists.
It is really difficult to think that the community and the authorities allow this
"reality show" to construct their "set" in the middle of the place where turtles hatch, in hatching season, without any permits, but worse: with neither conscience nor respect towards conservation policies of a species in danger of extinction. Although in Costa Rica we have committed mistakes, we are actually amazed that this happens in 2010, while authorities just observe. As told by a local guide of the community of Puerto Jiménez last week:
"If there are no animals, then there will be no tourists."

I don’t know who’s the person in Bocas del Toro that decides what’s best for Bocas del Toro. A popular TV show, whose plot is too little about the natural and cultural richness of the site, will not bring the attention to Bocas as a touristic destiny or natural legacy. And their coming to take advantage of that natural richness, leaving behind just destruction, is certainly not beneficial for any community.
Please, move earth and sky to make them respect the law of Panama and the dynamics of nature. No one should be forbidden to access beaches of Panama, human or reptile.

It has come to my attention that the set of the TV show "Desafio" has been built next to and possibly on top of active nests of endangered sea turtles. I am outraged that this has been allowed to happen, since it endangers further the lives of sea turtles that are already struggling to survive and maintain their species. This is a huge threat to the young sea turtle hatchlings, and I call on those in the proper positions to stop this terrible tragedy for the turtles and relocate the "Desafio" set.

I am writing to you to express my deep concern over the filming of a TV show at Las Bocas del Toro, one of few remaining turtle nesting beaches that critically needed for survival of sea turtles. In today's day and age, endangered species are being forced out of their natural habitats all the time and in all parts of the world. Sea turtles are critically endangered mostly because of developments destroying their breeding habitats along the world's most beautiful beaches. It is a disgrace that on top of touristic developments, which at least support local economies for years to come, your government allows the threatening of an entire population of sea turtles because of a TV show that will entertain viewers FOR ONE EVENING.How would it make you feel if you were the producer of this show and your child one day asks you: "Dad, I want to see a sea turtle, but people say they are gone. Why?" Can you imagine how you felt if you had to answer your child's question by saying, "It is my fault. The sea turtles are gone because we were greedy and thought we couldn't go to a different place to film our stupid show. I wish I had made a different decision."
We are committing sin after sin in destroying our environment for our future generation. Please don't let your island and your government be a passive accomplice in this tragedy.

Escribo para expresar mi profunda preocupación sobre la filmación del programa de televisión en Bocas del Toro, una de las pocas playas que quedan para la anidación de las tortugas que críticamente es necesaria para la supervivencia de las tortugas. Hoy en día, las especies en peligro son forzadas a salir de hábitat natural todo el tiempo y en todas partes del mundo. Las tortugas marinas se encuentran críticamente en peligro en mayor parte porque los desarrollos están destruyendo su hábitat de reproducción en todas las más hermosas playas del mundo. Es una desgracia que los desarrollos turísticos, que por lo menos aportan a las economías locales, se aprovechen de su gobierno que permite la amenaza de una población entera de tortugas marinas debido a un programa de televisión que entretendrá a los espectadores por SÓLO UNA NOCHE. ¿Cómo te sentirías si fueras el productor de este programa y tu hijo te pregunta un día: “Papá, quiero ver una tortuga marina, pero la gente dice que desaparecieron. ¿Por qué?” Te imaginas como te sentirías si tuvieses que responderle a ese niño diciendo: “Es mi culpa. Las tortugas marinas desaparecieron porque fuimos codiciosos y pensamos que no podíamos ir a un lugar distinto a filmar nuestro estúpido programa. Deseo haber tomado una decisión diferente”.
Estamos cometiendo pecado tras pecado al destruir nuestro ambiente para nuestra futura generación. Por favor, no dejen que su isla y su gobierno sean un cómplice pasivo en esta tragedia.

As a member of Hawaii's Malama na Honu organization, which is dedicated to conserving sea turtles, I was very disturbed to hear that a Colombian TV show is being filmed on a Panamanian island, which is also home to one of the largest sea turtle nesting beaches in the country. I most humbly beg you to petition the requisite authorities and stop this travesty. All species of sea turtles are are threatened in one way or another, and putting the animals in peril for the sake of cheap entertainment is simply unjust. Clearly, hosting a reality TV show is a financially lucrative move, but I believe that in the long-term, Panama will profit far more from a healthy ecosystem and showing the beauties of the land to appreciative tourists: an action that several countries in the world, such as Bonaire, Costa Rica and Suriname, have taken with great success.

Bocas has a winner!

In the Ninth Central American Games, held April 9-20 in Panama City, Bocatorenian Nora Serracin took the bronze medal for the women's triathlon with a time of 2 hours, 41 minutes and 59 seconds. In taking the medal for the swimming/bicycling/running event, Nora surprised not only her fellow competitors but herself as well. This was the first time she has participated in the games and she trained for the grueling event in less than a year. More than 1500 athletes competed in the games, representing the countries of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

Nora is the daughter of Willie and Juani Serracin (owners of Yarisnori Restaurant), and the granddaughter of Don Bolo, all of Boca del Drago.

¡Bocas tiene un ganador!

En los 9nos. Juegos Centroamericanos, celebrados el 9 de abril de 2010 en la ciudad de Panamá, la bocatoreña Nora Serracín obtuvo la medalla de bronce por el triatlón femenino con un tiempo de 2 horas, 41 minutos y 59 segundos. Al obtener la medalla por el evento de nado, ciclismo y atletismo, Nora no sólo sorprendió a sus compañeros competidores, sino a sí misma. Esta es la primera vez que ella participa en los juegos y entrenó para el agotador evento en menos de un año. Más de 1500 atletas compitieron en los juegos, representando a los países de Belice, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua y Panamá.

Nora es la hija de Willie y Juani Serracín (propietarios del Restaurante Yarisnori) y la nieta de Don Bolo, todos de Boca del Drago.

Jacy Lynn Hefner and Roosevelt "Chombo"Alexander Diaz Rios were united in marriage on April 12, 2010, in Bocas del Toro.

Jacy is the daughter of Lynn Mershon Hefner, of New Braunfels, Texas, and John Cy Hefner, of Pinson, Tennessee. She is the granddaughter of Charlene Mershon and Pete Peters, of New Braunfels, Texas and the late Frank Allen Mershon, M.D.; the late Vinnie Fermon "Tootie" Hefner and Mary Frances Hefner.

Chombo is the son of Anna Francisca Rios, Sylvester Orlando Diaz and Marcelina Murray. He is the grandson of Julieta Valencia Tello, the late Fernando Rios Arauz, and the late Willel Diaz. He brings into the marriage his daughters Rosmary and Amaris Diaz.

Chombo is a PADI-certified dive instructor at Starfleet Scuba in Bocas.

After a private ceremony, the couple celebrated with friends and family at El Ultimo Refugio.

The couple will make their home in Bocas del Toro.

Project Valiente completed; safe water for over 1000 children

Joe Bass, executive director of Operation Safe Drinking Water, announced the successful completion of "Project Valiente."

“On Saturday, March 27," Joe said, "we installed our fifth rain catchment system for schools out in the indigenous comarca on Peninsula Valiente. Five schools with a combined total of more than a thousand students, as well as nearby villagers, now have access to safe drinking water.”

He added, “This was our biggest single project to date. It took eight trips through the open sea beyond the Bocas del Toro island chain to the peninsula. Poor sea conditions turned us back twice, but we completed the final installation on March 27 at the Punta Valiente school. As soon as we finished the final hook-ups for the rain catchment system and took a group photo with the volunteer fathers, the rains swept through and began filling the 600-gallon tank. The fathers, who carried the tank and supplies up the steep hill, were overjoyed. It was their children who would have safe drinking water from now on right at the school.”

Schools where Operation Safe Drinking Water installed rain catchment tanks included Bahia Verde, Ensenada, Punta Serain, Bahia Azul and Punta Valiente.

What’s next for Operation Safe Drinking Water?

Joe said, “Outward Bound is helping us do a survey of remote schools to determine those which need help the most. We’re also asking all Bocas del Toro residents to call our attention to any school in their area with an acute need for clean water.”

Proyecto Valiente completado; agua potable para más de 1000 niños

Joe Bass, director ejecutivo de Operación Agua Segura, anunció la exitosa finalización del “Proyecto Valiente”.

“El sábado 27 de marzo”, dijo Joe, “instalamos nuestro quinto sistema de recolección de agua de lluvia en escuelas de la comarca indígena en la Península Valiente. Cinco escuelas con un total de más de mil estudiantes, al igual que vecinos del área, ahora cuentan con acceso a agua potable”.

Agregó, “Este fue nuestro mayor proyecto hasta el momento. Nos tomó ocho viajes mar abierto por la cadena de islas de Bocas del Toro hasta la península. Las pobres condiciones del mar nos hicieron regresar dos veces, pero completamos la final instalación el 27 de marzo en la escuela de Punta Valiente. Cuando terminamos los últimos detalles para el sistema de recolección de agua de lluvia y nos tomamos una foto del grupo con los padres de los voluntarios, la lluvia azotó y comenzó a llenar el tanque de 600 galones. Los padres, quienes cargaron el tanque y los materiales a la cima, estaban felices. Eran sus hijos quienes iban a tener agua segura desde ahora en la escuela”.

Las escuelas donde Operación Agua Segura instaló los tanques para la recolección de agua de lluvia fueron Bahía Verde, Ensenada, Punta Seraín, Bahía Azul y Punta Valiente.

¿Qué es lo próximo para Operación Agua Segura?

Joe dijo, “Outward Bound nos está ayudando a realizar un censo de las escuelas remotas para determinar aquellas que más necesiten de nuestra ayuda. También estamos solicitando a los residentes de Bocas del Toro que nos informen sobre las escuelas en el área que tengan una mayor necesidad de agua potable”.
