Most visitors to Bocas spend their time in town or at the beach, or take a bus ride out to Drago and take a short hike to Starfish Beach. Not too many tourists get to see much of what else Isla Colon has to offer.

For those willing to walk a bit, sweat a bit, and get a little dirty, there’s a lot more to see and experience. The interior of Isla Colon offers a variety of adventures for those looking for “something different."

Take cave exploring for instance. While most visitors have heard of La Gruta, very few are aware that there are many other caves to explore. The karst topography (limestone and coral) of Bocas is perfect for the formation of caves and there are many open for discovery and exploration.

Having visited Bocas now for nine years in a row, and spending several months on each visit, I have had time to walk around a large part of the island and have found quite a few caves in my journeys. I know of at least fifteen and there are probably a lot more I’ll come across in the future. Each of the caves is an adventure waiting to happen.

Keep in mind that caves can be dangerous for those not prepared and without caving experience. The caves should be visited in the company of someone who understands them and is aware of the dangers inherent in their exploration. There are local guides who know the whereabouts of these subterranean spots and who can lead visitors to them. Be aware that most of these caves are “wild” and have not been developed as tourist attractions. Be careful!

La mayoría de los visitantes de Bocas pasan su tiempo en el pueblo o en la playa, o toman un bus a Drago y caminan a la playa Starfish. No muchos turistas llegan a ver mucho de lo que Isla Colón tiene para ofrecer.

Para aquellos que quieran caminar y ensuciarse un poco, hay mucho más para ver y experimentar. El interior de Isla Colón ofrece una variedad de aventuras para aquellos que buscan “algo diferente”.

Explora cuevas, por ejemplo. Mientras la mayoría de los visitantes han oído sobre La Gruta, muy pocos saben que hay muchas otras cuevas por explorar. La kárstica topografía (caliza y coral) de Bocas es perfecta para la formación de cuevas y hay muchas por ser descubiertas y exploradas.

Habiendo visitado Bocas por nueve años seguidos y pasado varios meses durante casa visita, he tenido tiempo de caminar alrededor de una gran parte de la isla y he encontrado varias cuevas en mis viajes. Se de por lo menos quince y, probablemente, hay más por descubrir en el futuro. Cada una de las cuevas es una aventura esperando.

Ten presente que las cuevas pueden ser peligrosas para aquellos que no están preparados y que no tengan experiencia en cuevas. Las cuevas deben ser visitadas con la compañía de alguien que las entienda y sepa de los peligros inherentes a su exploración. Hay guías locales que saben la ubicación de estos lugares subterráneos y que pueden guiar a los visitantes. Sé conciente que la mayoría de estas cuevas son “salvajes” y no han sido desarrolladas como atracciones turísticas. ¡Ten cuidado!

Dave "Kiwi" and Lin Gillingham are two immensely popular and highly respected members of the Bocas community. Since moving here nearly ten years ago, Kiwi, a native New Zealander, and Lin, originally from England, have become famous for their generosity to locals and foreign residents alike, for their uncompromising work ethics, outstanding quality of workmanship, and recently, for the public opening of their beautiful botanical garden Finca Los Monos.

Incredibly, the Gillinghams are now under siege by a wealthy Panamanian family that is making attempts to take their home, their garden, and everything they have worked for this past decade.

We at the Bocas Breeze have been standing by, along with hundreds of Kiwi and Lin's friends. and are ready to meet at their residence at a moment's notice if and when there is a third attempt to invade their property. We have cameras, videographers, documentarists and reporters prepared to witness and record this illegal land-grabbing endeavor.

It is sincerely hoped that the most recent delay of the invasion is due to a certain judge's reconsideration of the intruders' claims and that instead of becoming a part of such a debacle, he has chosen to do the right thing and remove himself from the situation. It is further hoped that the family proposing to take the Gillinghams' property reevaluates their challenge, considers inherent damage to their reputation and irreversible disrespect of their family name. – Allene Blaker

The Impacto Project: My Island, Bocas – Youth Photo Exhibit, May 7

Founder and Executive Director, documentary filmmaker Anayansi Prado started the project with co-founders filmmaker Elease Lui and filmmaker/journalist Lisa Garibay in Los Angeles, Calif., with the idea of bringing visual arts to the youth of Bocas del Toro.

Five girls and four boys, ages ranging from 12 to 14, were selected for the course which was carried out in collaboration with the Bet-El Educational Institute and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. During the 5-week pilot program, photographer and director of photography, Victor Mares taught basic elements of photography to the youth who responded with great enthusiasm and lots of creativity.

The program culminates with a free public exhibit entitled My Island, Bocas, on May 7 at the IPAT building (Panamanian Institute of Tourism) from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Photographs taken by the youths will be on display and available for purchase, as well as postcards.

As part of the contributing back to the community component of the program, all proceeds from the event will be donated to the Casa de Asilo (Bocas Town’s Elder Care Center) here in Bocas del Toro.

Bocas willing

I will die in Bocas. Not tomorrow, I dare say. But when I do, it will be here. That eventuality poses two encumbrances: What to do with my body. What to do with my possessions.

I plan to arrange the legal permissions to be buried at sea. Whole. Unembalmed, uncremated. In a body bag that allows ingress, but that lets nothing shocking egress. More details later, after I’ve firmed arrangements.

My possessions, meaning household/personal goods (not including realty I own or cash in banks), while valuable, are not worth the effort involved in packing them up and transporting from Bocas to my USA relatives. So I’m leaving them to BESO. I have bequeathed my stuff to BESO (Bocas Educational Service Organization) for their Charity Auction – to you.

In this manner, those of you who have been eyeing some of my stuff, especially my pottery collection, are going to have the opportunity to own it. I know, you thought I intended to gift it to you, in my Will, for free. I am disappointing you, my affluent friend, for a purpose. The purpose is, to possess my stuff, you must share your wealth, making abundant both you and BESO’s beneficiaries.

I encourage you to do the same. Leave your stuff to BESO. Your relatives at home, like mine, probably don’t need or want your secondhand garage-sale goods. But willing your stuff to BESO, or the Asilo, or some cause in Bocas, can be your payback for having lived in paradise, nearly for free. Your legacy can be pieces of your self.

Memory is all that is truly owned by any person. The rest is used, occupied, held for a life term. Memories, created by you alone, are your sole soul possessions. Make a memory, now, while you are still alive to enjoy it. Will your stuff to a Bocas cause. Then, tomorrow, the memory of you will be reborn in other lives.

Herencia en Bocas

Moriré en Bocas. Me atrevo a decir que mañana no. Pero cuando suceda, estaré aquí. Esa eventualidad genera dos cuestiones: ¿qué hacer con mi cuerpo? ¿qué hacer con mis posesiones?

Planeo arreglar los permisos legales para ser enterrado en el mar. Entero. Sin embalsamar, sin cremar. En una bolsa que permita ingreso, pero que no deje que nada chocante egrese. Daré más detalles después de haber terminado los arreglos.

Te estoy decepcionando mi rico amigo para un propósito. El propósito es que para obtener mis cosas, tienes que compartir tu riqueza, haciendo abundante a ambos: tú y los beneficiarios de BESO.

Te aliento a que hagas lo mismo. Deja tus cosas a BESO. Tus familiares en casa, como los míos, probablemente no necesiten o quieran tus bienes de segunda mano. Pero al dejar tus cosas a BESO o al Asilo o a alguna causa en Bocas, puede ser tu devolución por haber vivido en el paraíso, casi gratis. Tu legado puede ser partes de ti.

Los recuerdos son lo que realmente posee una persona. El resto es utilizado, ocupado, poseído por una vida.

Los recuerdos, creados sólo por tí, son las posesiones de tu alma. Crea un recuerdo ahora, mientras estés vivo para disfrutarlo. Deja tus cosas a una causa de Bocas. Luego, mañana, tu recuerdo renacerá en otras vidas.

Joel Robertson Transportation does transport between Panama City, Bocas, David and Boquete. He has several large trucks and even handles arrangements in Panama City for transporting goods between the U.S. and here. As hauling away local recyclables is a challenging job for Wongsa to handle on its own, we encourage other trucking services to assist in the effort by offering to fill any empty space they may have when returning to Panama City. Chainsaw artist makes the chips fly

Brian Neil "Bubba" Daniel, a Tennessee native but Texas transplant for the last 14 years, is now living in Bocas and testing Panama's native wood for art purposes.

In his first year in Texas, Bubba was playing in a cover band when Doug Moreland joined them onstage with his fiddle. Before long, Bubba was hanging out with Doug on a regular basis, co-writing novelty songs, honing their musical skills and getting to know more and more Texas musicians and venues.

Doug Moreland already had a reputation as a chainsaw artist as a side venture from his traveling music show and Bubba was impressed by how quickly Doug could turn a stump or a log into an animal or caricature. He asked Doug if he would teach him how to chainsaw carve but Doug said it was something he couldn't teach … he added, though, that if Bubba just kept watching, he'd learn how it was done on his own.

So Bubba watched and soon started hacking away at stumps, getting the feel of the chainsaw, starting to understand the contours of various woods and beginning to see how the shape of a stump or log can predict what kind of animal or other figure it will become when worked.

Before long he was helping Doug fill orders for chainsaw-carved bears. For some reason, bears were the number one selling figure and the two carved hundreds of them – from 2-foot-high doorstops to 16-foot-high RV park figures.

But after carving so many bears Bubba wanted to attempt other animals, and discover more abstract kinds of art.

The chainsaw artistry soon pushed Bubba into finding other ways of carving. He bought different types and sizes of chisels, rotary bits and anything that he could use as a woodworking tool. He even tried unconventional methods, such as putting a chain on backwards on his chainsaw as a way of polishing hardwood, foregoing the use of sandpaper.

With his increasing experience and knowledge of chainsaw carving, wood carving, finishing and polishing, Bubba soon began to incorporate more of his lifestyle pursuits into his art.

His love of surfing pretty much forced him into creating surfers within waves within trunks of trees. His intention was to capture and express the feelings that he has had while surfing himself: the energy of waves versus the body's strength. To Bubba's mind, the waves have energy just as the wood does … it just has to be discovered and expressed by the artist, whether surfer or woodcarver.

Bubba recently traversed the U.S., carving from Malibu, Calif., to Texas to the East Coast. In Pennsylvania he attended the Ridgway Rendezvous which is the largest chainsaw artist gathering in the world and this year had more than 20,000 attendees.

Over the years, Bubba has enlarged his horizons on many fronts. From those original 2-foot high bear doorstops, he has been commissioned to carve 18-foot high totem poles, with seemingly every kind of animal or object in between, including 6-foot high mermaids, countless dolphins in every pose, sea turtle lamps, Hawaiian tiki masks and frontispieces, Merlin the magician and more.

It took about five years before Bubba realized that no matter what he was requested to create, if he knew the subject, and found the right piece of wood, he could carve it.

Bubba came to Bocas in early April to explore different types of native Central American woods, specifically driftwood washed ashore that has not been at sea too long …

The first week he was here, he saw an unusual piece of wood -- a fork of a tree trunk -- washed up on a beach in town. His first thought was that someone would probably burn it as it wasn't too waterlogged. Turning it over with his foot, he thought he saw two fish emerging from the two limbs. Twisting the wood in a slightly different direction, he then saw it wasn't two fish trying to escape the wood, it was one animal. Looking a little closer he saw a moray eel.

He took the piece of wood to his temporary lodgings, borrowed a friend's chainsaw, and within hours released the moray eel from its previous home.

Durante varios años, Bubba ha agrandado sus horizontes en muchos frentes. Desde esos osos originales de dos pies para trabar puertas, le han solicitado tallar postes para tótems de 18 pies de alto, con animales u objetos en el medio, incluyendo sirenas de 6 pies de alto, incontables delfines en todas las poses, lámparas de tortugas marinas, máscaras de Tiki de Hawai y frontispicios, el mago Merlín y más.

Su primer pensamiento fue que alguien probablemente lo quemaría ya que no tenía mucho tiempo en el agua. Al voltearlo con su pie, creyó ver dos peces saliendo de los dos ramas. Torciendo la madera en una dirección diferente, vio que no eran dos peces intentando escapar de la madera, sino un animal. Al mirar de más cerca, él vio una morena.

Llevó el pedazo de madera a su vivienda temporal, tomó prestada la sierra eléctrica de un amigo y en pocas horas liberó a la morena de su antiguo hogar.

Inaugural Boat Races in Bocas del Toro Drenched With Fun

Destined to become a must-attend yearly event, the 1st Annual Bastimentos Boat Races were held the last weekend of March in Bocas del Toro. Mother Nature smiled down on the archipelago and both days were blue-skied and sun-shiny. The races were the brainchild of our own JB Seligman, who had a vision while taking the rare occasion to sip a cocktail at a local watering hole. The Bastimentos community pulled together to ready Old Bank for the festivities. The spotless neighborhood was evidence that the local residents took pride in hosting the event.

At JB’s urging, Suzuki hopped on board and became the weekend’s main sponsor, donating a 6-hp boat motor and pitching a tent in the middle of town where volunteers Forrest Walker and Mary Ann Nash signed up race entrants. During the heat of the day, local vendors attended to the thirsty, hungry spectators by propping up makeshift bars and eateries throughout town. Some folks even offered up food and drink right out of their homes. Also taking advantage of the crowds were a fruit and veggie stand and a booth peddling trinkets, toys and baseball caps.

Finding the current excuse to have a party, it seemed that nearly every floating vessel in the area was in Old Bank harbor, as dozens of boats played host to hundreds of spectators. Anchored sailboats tied up to one another and dinghies jammed with bathing beauties bobbed from one floating fête to the next; cayucos and pangas pushed their maximum load limits. Water taxis feverishly shuttled people to and from Bocas Town throughout the two-day contest, as every islander wanted to get a glimpse of the novel agua competitions.

Kicking off the weekend’s events were the men and women’s Surfboard-Paddling Races. This writer is still exhausted from watching the arm pumping effort. Some of the male entrants might be hoping the course buoy is a bit closer to shore next year!

Following up was Cayuco Jousting. Two male competitors manned each cayuco, while one paddled and one wielded the Bocas-style “weapon”, a seven-foot stick with foam fastened with duct tape on the outer end. Impressive displays of strategy and balance, with the added pressure of having to continuously bail the boats free of water.

The Four-Man Cayuco Race was a fierce contest, with the boats at one point colliding with one another, and the entrants exhausted afterward.

A definite crowd favorite was the Blind Dinghy competition. One partner made navigation decisions while the other one attempted to row the boat while blindfolded. JB himself decided to enter the race with his lady Lorelei and had barely gotten “out of the gate” when the race was already over. The crowd doubled over with laughter throughout the entire snafu.

The much-anticipated Power Boat Races filled up the remainder of Saturday afternoon and all of Sunday. Spectators gazed in amazement and cheered on their favorites, from the 15-hp speedboats, to the 15-75hp fiberglass panga races. The skilled drivers maneuvered their crafts deftly around a course that enveloped the party boats in the harbor.

Special thanks to Oriel of Carenero for serving as race director, organizer Nebraska Jim for keeping everything on schedule and Earl Meck from BOSS, who supplied the safety boat throughout the weekend in the event of a mishap.

The fun didn’t stop on the water. Over on terra firma, softball games were played and impromptu foot races were held on the sidewalk for the local children. The challenging greased-pole contest went on for hours, and in the end it took several young men standing atop each other’s shoulders to finally reach “the gold” at the top, a sack filled with cash and other prizes.

Rounding out the weekend was the imaginative Frozen T-shirt contest. For those who weren’t there I’ll just leave that one to your imagination. Those who attended the post-party at the Treehouse Hotel were witnesses to JB's being awarded the tongue-in-cheek “Key to Bastimentos”: a crowbar spray-painted gold.

Inauguración de la Carrera de Botes en Bocas del Toro empapada de diversión

Destinada a ser el evento obligatorio anual, la 1ra. Carrera de Botes Anual de Bastimentos se celebró el último fin de semana de marzo en Bocas del Toro. La Madre Naturaleza nos sonrió en el archipiélago y ambos días tuvieron cielos celestes y un sol brillante. Las carreras fueron la creación de nuestro propio JB Seligman, quien tuvo una visión durante la rara ocasión de estar tomando un cocktail por ahí. La comunidad de Bastimentos preparó al Viejo Banco para los festejos. El impecable vecindario fue evidencia de que los residentes locales estaban orgullosos de ser los anfitriones del evento.

A solicitud de JB, Suzuki subió a bordo y fue el patrocinador principal del fin de semana al donar un motor de 6 caballos de fuerza y montar una carpa en el medio del pueblo donde los voluntarios Forrest Walker y Mary Ann Nash inscribían a los participantes. Durante el día, vendedores locales atendieron a los sedientos y hambrientos espectadores al preparar bares improvisados alrededor del pueblo. Algunas personas hasta ofrecían comidas y bebidas desde sus casas. Tomando ventaja de la multitud, también había un puesto de frutas y vegetales y uno que vendía baratijas, juguetes y gorras de baseball.

Al tener la excusa perfecta para hacer una fiesta, parecía que cada bote en el área estaba en el puerto del Viejo Banco, ya que docenas de botes jugaban de anfitriones de cientos de espectadores. Botes anclados pegados uno al otro y dinguis llenos de bellezas en trajes de baño iban y venían; cayucos y pangas llegaron a su límite máximo de carga. Los taxis acuáticos llevaban personas desde y a Bocas durante el concurso que duró dos días, ya que todos querían ver la competición acuática.

Al comenzar los eventos del fin de semana estuvieron las Carreras de Remo de Tablas de Surf de hombres y mujeres. Esta escritora todavía está exhausta de ver los brazos esforzándose. ¡Algunos de los participantes masculinos deben estar deseando que las boyas estén un poco más cerca de la orilla el año próximo!

Siguiente, estaba el Combate de Cayucos. Dos competidores masculinos manejaban cada cayuco, mientras uno remaba, el otro manejaba el “arma” al estilo Bocas, un palo de siete pies con espuma pegado con cinta en el extremo externo. Se vio el manejo de estrategias y balance impresionantes, agregando la presión de tener continuamente que sacar el agua del bote.

La Carrera de Cayucos de Cuatro Hombres fue una competencia feroz, con los botes en un punto tocándose uno con el otro y los participantes exhaustos al final.

El favorito de la multitud fue la competencia ciega de dinguis. Un participante tomaba las decisiones de navegación mientras el otro intentaba remar el bote con los ojos tapados. JB decidió participar de esta carrera con su mujer Lorelei y de casualidad pudo salir del punto de partida cuando la competencia ya había terminado. La multitud se divirtió mucho durante la entera confusión.

La muy anticipada Carrera de Botes de Motor llenó lo que quedaba de la tarde del sábado y todo el domingo. Los espectadores miraban maravillados y aclamaban a sus favoritos, desde los botes de 15 caballos de fuerza a las pangas de fibra de vidrio de 15 a 75 caballos de fuerza. Los hábiles conductores manejaron sus botes por un curso que encerraba a los botes que estaban de fiesta en el puerto.

Un agradecimiento especial a Oriel de Carenero por servir como el director de la carrera, al organizador Nebraska Jim por llevar todo a horario y Earl Meck de BOSS, quien brindó seguridad a los botes durante el fin de semana en caso de un percance.

La diversión no paró en el agua. En tierra firme, se jugaron juegos de softball y carreras improvisadas se celebraron en las veredas para los niños locales. La desafiante competencia de palo ensebado continuó por horas y al final, varios jóvenes terminaron en los hombros de otros para finalmente alcanzar “el oro” en la cima, un saco lleno de efectivo y otros premios.

Terminando el fin de semana estuvo el imaginativo concurso de sweaters Congelados. Para aquellos que no estuvieron allí, lo dejo a su imaginación. Aquellos que fueron a la fiesta en el Hotel Treehouse fueron testigos del momento en que JB fue premiado con la cómica “Llave de Bastimentos”: una palanca pintada con aerosol de dorada.

Gracias JB por hacer que la Carrera de Botes de Bastimentos sea uno de los eventos más memorables del año.

Sea gypsy settles down long enough to write a book

Not everyone is meant to be a sailor.

I'm not.

I sailed once from California to Hawaii and resigned from the sailing life shortly thereafter, simply because while happy to have lived through the experience, I had the good sense not to consider doing anything like it ever again.

Others in this world are meant to be sailors. Maybe it's in their blood or their hearts, or they've been reading too many Jack London and Hermann Melville books.

Ray Jason just wanted to make some use out of his political science degree.

Ray looks like the kind of guy who could juggle bowling balls, and not just because he has big muscles. The biggest clue is that he actually carries around three bowling balls … in a sack that also has machetes, knives and axes which he juggles when he's not tossing the bowling balls around. These are not imitation bowling balls, machetes, knives and axes. These are the real things, heavy or sharp. Adds to the fun.

The reason Ray puts on juggling shows wherever he goes is to make money to get provisions for his boat so he can sail on to wherever his wanderlust has lured him next. Since leaving his original port of San Francisco, Calif., he's put many thousands of miles on his sloop Aventura and these days calls the Bocas marina home, although home is never very long in one place for sailors like Ray.

To further supplement the costs of maintaining his vehicle and his lifestyle, Ray has been submitting articles to sailing magazines for many years … delighting readers with his many adventures, and (more often, it seems) misadventures on the high seas.

Eventually he was talked into compiling the best of his works into one book, resulting in Tales of a Sea Gypsy, published in 2001 by Paradise Cay Publications. Here, one can find 22 captivating yarns, ranging from amusing to heart-stopping to inspirational, but always entertaining.

As for the political science degree? He got it and was headed for law school when the Viet Nam war interfered with his plans. After a tour of duty on an ammunition ship he lost his zeal for politics and all that encompassed, but found a love of the ocean and for mankind's varied efforts at traversing it. He's been at sea ever since.

And though I've seen those bowling balls and weapons fly many a time with never a miss … I nonetheless suggest you stand back a ways while he's performing.

Yo no.

Navegué una vez de California a Hawai y renuncié a la vida marina poco después, simplemente porque, a pesar de haberlo experimentado felizmente, no considero pasar por eso nunca más.

Otras personas en el mundo sí han nacido para ser marineros. Quizás está en su sangre o en sus corazones, o han leído muchos libros de Jack London y Hermann Melville.

Ray Jason sólo quería hacer uso de su título en ciencias políticas.

Ray parece la clase de persona que puede hacer malabares con bolas de bolos, y no sólo porque tiene músculos grandes. La clave es que él realmente lleva consigo tres bolas de bolos… en un saco que también tiene machetes, cuchillos y hachas, con los cuales él hace malabares cuando no está lanzando las bolas de bolos. Estas no son imitaciones de bolas de bolos, machetes, cuchillos y hachas. Son reales, pesadas y filosas. Es más divertido.

La razón por la cual Ray comenzó a hacer malabares muestra que donde sea que él vaya es para hacer dinero para obtener provisiones para su bote para poder navegar a donde sea que sus ansias de conocer el mundo lo tienten. Desde que se fue de su puerto originario de San Francisco, California, ha agregado miles de millas a su bote Aventura y hoy en día, llama hogar a la marina de Bocas, aunque el hogar no dura mucho tiempo en un lugar para marineros como Ray.

Después de un viaje de deber en un barco de municiones, perdió su entusiasmo por la política y todo lo que se relaciona a ella, pero encontró el amor por el océano y por los varios esfuerzos del hombre para atravesarlo. Ha estado en el océano desde entonces.

Cuentos de una Tortuga Gitana se puede pedir por Amazon.com. Para aquellos afortunados de ver uno de sus actos de malabares: Son muy buenos. Y a pesar de haber visto esas bolas y armas volar varias veces sin que ninguna se le caiga… te recomiendo que no te pares cerca cuando veas sus actos.

Eight teams entered the 4th Annual Bocas Chili Challenge held at Wari Wari Beach Restaurant on April 18. For the second year in a row, Shelly's BBQ won first place, in spite of fierce but friendly competition.

Over $1000 was raised for BESO between ticket sales, beverages, t-shirts and chicken bingo. Chicken bingo? Well, you pay for a square and if the chicken "drops a message" on your square, you win $20. There are other names for this game, but this is a family publication.

Thanks to all the contestants for entering and to everyone who attended. This was the first year it was at the Wari Wari and we think it turned out very well. The band Castaways continued to play even after the winners were announced and many people hung around for the entertainment.

Ocho equipos participaron en el 4to. Concurso Anual de Chile de Bocas celebrado en el restaurante Wari Wari Beach el 18 de abril. Por segundo año consecutivo, Shelly’s BBQ ganó el primer lugar, a pesar de la fuerte pero amistosa competencia.

Más de $1,000.00 fueron recaudados para BESO entre la venta de entradas, bebidas, sweaters y Chicken bingo. ¿Chicken bingo? Bueno, tú pagas un cuadrado y si la gallina “déja un mensaje” en tu cuadrado, tú ganas $20.00. Hay otros nombres para este juego, pero esta es una publicación familiar.

Gracias a todos los participantes y a todos los que estuvieron presentes. Este fue el primer año que se realiza en el Wari Wari y pensamos que salió muy bien. La banda Castaways continuó tocando después que los ganadores fueron anunciados y muchas personas se quedaron en el entretenimiento.

BESO (Bocas Educational Service Organization) introduced its new t-shirt design for 2009 at the annual Auction in March. A sea turtle surrounded by an ocean littered with trash illustrates the concern we all have about keeping our environment clean for the future of the children of Bocas del Toro.

Keeping with the theme, for this year’s uniform giveaway BESO required each child to fill a large trash bag with those unsightly recyclable plastic bottles that are too often found lying on the ground in our island home. It was heartening to witness over 150 children bringing the stuffed bags to host business Toro Loco in Bocas Town in exchange for their free uniforms. Passersby the first weekend in April could witness the mounds of recyclables ready to be taken to Panama City.

It was a win-win situation for all—the community was cleaner for all to enjoy and the children learned a lesson about earning the uniforms they can’t attend classes without.

Joel Robertson Transportation graciously took the truckload of bags to Panama City for recycling.

Meanwhile, out at Drago, a beach and road clean-up was held on Saturday, April 11, and attended by more than 15 school children, many parents and foreign residents. Two pick-up loads of trash and recyclables were collected: the trash was burned at one resident's home and the recyclables were delivered to Wongsa. Following the clean-up, all volunteers were treated to refreshments while uniforms and shoes were distributed to those students whose lists had been turned in to BESO in previous weeks. Others turned in lists that day and were given uniforms the following Monday. The students send their sincere thanks to the BESO organization, and all of Bocas thanks the children for their tremendous job cleaning up Drago.

BESO (Organización de Servicios Educativos de Bocas) presentó su nuevo diseño de sweaters para el 2009 en la Subasta anual en marzo. Una tortuga marina rodeada por un océano lleno de basura ilustra la preocupación que todos tenemos por mantener nuestro ambiente limpio para el futuro de los niños de Bocas del Toro.

Siguiendo con el tema, para la entrega de uniformes de este año, BESO requirió que cada niño llene una bolsa de basura grande de botellas de plástico reciclables que usualmente se encuentran en el piso de nuestra isla. Fue alentador ver a más de 150 niños llevando las bolsas llenas al local anfitrión Toro Loco en Bocas a cambio de sus uniformes gratuitos. Los peatones pudieron ver durante el primer fin de semana de abril las montañas de reciclables listos para ser llevados a la Ciudad de Panamá.

Fue una situación ganadora para todos –la comunidad estaba más limpia para que todos la disfrutemos y los niños aprendieran una lección sobre cómo ganar los uniformes sin los cuales no pueden ir a la escuela.

Mientras tanto, en Drago, se celebró una limpieza de playa y carretera el sábado 11 de abril, a la cual participaron más de 15 alumnos, muchos padres y residentes extranjeros. Se juntaron dos cargas de camión de basura y reciclables: la basura se quemó en la casa de un residente y los reciclables fueron llevados a Wongsa. Después de la limpieza, se les dio refrescos a todos los voluntarios y uniformes y zapatos fueron distribuidos a aquellos alumnos cuyas listas fueron entregadas a BESO las semanas anteriores. Algunos presentaron listas ese mismo día y se les dio uniformes el siguiente lunes. Los estudiantes enviaron un sincero agradecimiento a la organización BESO y todo Bocas agradece a los niños por su tremendo trabajo limpiando Drago.
