Island Interiors is ushering in a new Bocas hallmark for fine interior furnishing and exquisite local and imported gifts.

Francesca Petelle, or “Check” as she is known to her friends, inaugurated Island Interiors in April of last year and with an accent on service she is well on her way to establishing herself for product quality and business integrity.

“I had been thinking about opening a small store for years,” confesses Check. “It was a weird twist of fate that got me into furniture in the first place, but I’m really enjoying how it’s worked out. Bocas seems to be appreciating what we’re doing and our new suppliers have been a joy to work with.” She is now operating this delightful furniture company through her warehouse, multiple storage containers and her waterfront store and showroom, with customer boat docking. The store is welcomingly wedged in between Virginia Vasquez’s property management office and the Taxi 25 water taxi station on First Street (Calle 1).

Island Interiors stocks an engaging array of furnishing including dressers, bookcases, tables, chairs, sun-resistant patio furniture and complete bedroom sets.

“Our emphasis is definitely on insect resistant solid teak furniture. Our beautiful tropic region is pretty hard on furnishings in general and teak is universally accepted as your best defense.” Catering to their customers’ different tastes the store offers several styles of many of their items and many unique, one-of-a-kind handcrafted treasures to give one’s home that individual touch. They also carry an interesting assortment of household accessories such as lamps, wall hangings, paintings and curtains. And for the home builder they stock granite countertops, hand-hewn rock vanity sinks, exotic cast bathtubs and a large variety of natural stone tiles, stone wall cladding and paving stones.

“Business has been good,” she says with a smile. “Plus we now have long time friend Ms. Lola Downey on the Island Interiors team. Lola has lived and worked in furniture and interior design in Bali for over twenty years. Her artisan’s eye for quality and extensive knowledge of Indonesian furniture assure the highest quality and artistically unique solid teak products available anywhere.”

“Simply walking into the store is refreshing”, say many of Check’s customers. “It’s fun to just look!”

Quality and artistic appeal is at the forefront of Island Interiors approach. It’s a place where you can find something special and you can trust you’re buying the best available at the best price. “Quality does have a price,” admits Check as we tour her intriguingly appointed store, “but over time you end up paying for quality anyway, so you might as well have it!”

Island Interiors also offers a large selection of unique gifts and woodcrafts to please discriminating taste. There are hand-carved bowls of the most exotic hardwoods, figurines and collectables in many styles as well as books on tropical decorating. And store manager Elio Brown also offers custom picture framing. “There’s really too much to list,” says Janelly Guizado, Francesca’s charming sales associate, “but we invite everyone to come in and browse around.”

Francesca, with her husband Scott and their three daughters (two Tahitians and a Kiwi) have lived on Isla Carenero since 2004. “We tried Costa Rica for a few years,” says Scott, a builder and long-time maritime captain, “but Bocas kept pulling on us. Check and I spent fourteen years traveling a lot of the world as owners/operators of a 28-meter charter sailboat but I gotta tell ya, it’s hard to beat Bocas for its special combination of accessibility, lifestyle and natural beauty.” And after having traveled through 37 countries before settling in Bocas, that says a lot.

Check and Scott smile when they talk of Bocas. “Bocas is just like living on a boat,” they laughingly admit with their girls, Ayla, Tasman and Lana. “Living at sea, you have to deal with your own problems; just like in Bocas. Life is what you make it. We love it here!”

Island Interiors – una mueblería poco común

“He estado pensando en abrir un pequeño negocio por años”, confesa Check. “Fue por una de esas vueltas de la vida que terminé vendiendo muebles, pero estoy disfrutando como está funcionando. Bocas parece estar apreciando lo que estamos haciendo y ha sido una maravilla trabajar con nuestros proveedores”. Ahora, ella está operando esta encantadora empresa de venta de muebles a través de su almacén, múltiples contenedores de almacenaje y su local y salón de ventas frente al mar, con clientes atracando sus botes. El local está muy bien ubicado entre la oficina de manejo de propiedades de Virginia Vásquez y la estación de taxis acuáticos Taxi 25 en Calle Primera.

Francesca, junto con su esposo Scott y sus tres hijas (dos tahitianas y una neozelandesa) han vivido en Isla Carenero desde el 2004.. “Hemos intentado Costa Rica por años”, dice Scott, constructor y capitán marino de toda la vida, “pero Bocas siempre nos atrajo. Check y yo pasamos catorce años viajando mucho por el mundo como dueños/operadores de un velero charter de 28 metros pero te tengo que decir, es difícil superar a Bocas por su combinación especial de accesibilidad, estilo de vida y belleza natural”. Y después de haber viajado a 37 países, eso es mucho decir.

Note from the editor

As the picture shows, sand mining is not abating at Bluff Beach, but increasing. In less than a week, hundreds of truckloads of sand were dug up and hauled off to a private residence. It is against the law in Panama to take sand from a beach. The laws preventing this could not be more clear. There are municipal, provincial, federal and environmental agencies in Bocas del Toro who individually or collectively could and should put a stop to this practice. Why aren’t they doing it?

As for the man in the white uniform in the lower picture … he is spraying herbicides along the edge of the city’s water reservoir. Something else to think about. – Allene Blaker

Como muestra la foto, la extracción de arena no está disminuyendo en Playa Bluff, sino más bien aumentando. Tribute to Marvin Russell Powell

Marvin Russell Powell, 57, of Panama, formerly of Blanchester, Ohio, died Jan. 27, 2008 in a car accident on the highway between Almirante and the Chiriqui Grande turn-off.

Marvin was a long-time Bocas resident and was our neighbor in a Bocas town apartment building for more than a year and a half. He was an avid reader and book trader. Anyone seeing a used paperback in town with a large black M scrawled across its outer leaf edges can be assured that Marvin once read that book. That was how he reminded himself of what he’d already read, which beat finding it out in the fifth or tenth chapter.

Marvin was a gourmand, and a gourmet cook. He was always trying out new recipes, buying cookbooks and kitchen gadgets and giving us neighbors all sorts of main dishes, baked goods and desserts. He entered the First Annual Bocas Chili Cook-off in 2006, had the smallest table in the least amount of space, but used the most ingredients (chocolate and butter included), and won the event.

He liked to play cards online, often in tournaments that began sometime after midnight and ended just before daylight. When he was winning we could hear him laughing or singing and banging on his desk. When he was losing, he would throw shoes or other objects at the wall. We learned to sleep through his joys and pains. That’s why when there was a big earthquake one night and everyone in town jumped out of bed and ran out into the streets, we slept right through it. We just thought it was Marvin winning or losing another tournament.

He was generous to a fault, full of life and had a good word for everyone.

We’re going to miss you, Marvelous. Someone suggested we have a moment of silence in your honor at the Chili Cook-off coming up in April. A moment of loudness might be more to your liking. Maybe we’ll do both. Rest in peace, bro’.

Tributo a Marvin Russell Powell

Marvin Russell Powell, 57, de Panamá, anteriormente de Blanchester, Ohio, falleció el 27 de enero de 2008 en un accidente de carro en la salida de la carretera entre Almirante y Chiriquí Grande.

Marvin era un residente desde hace mucho tiempo de Bocas y nuestro vecino en un apartamento de la isla por más de un año y medio. Él era un ávido lector e intercambiaba libros. Cualquiera que vea una edición de bolsillo en la isla con una gran M en negro garabateada en los bordes de la página posterior puede asegurar que Marvin leyó ese libro alguna vez. Esa era su manera de recordarse lo que ya había leído, lo cual es mucho mejor a descubrirlo en el quinto o décimo capítulo.

Marvin era un gourmand y un cocinero gourmet. Siempre estaba probando recetas nuevas, comprando libros de cocina y accesorios de cocina y dándonos a sus vecinos todas clases de platos, cosas horneadas y postres. Él participó en el Primer Concurso Anual de Cocina con Chile de Bocas en el 2006, tenía la mesa más pequeña en un mínimo espacio, pero utilizó la mayor cantidad de ingredientes (incluyendo chocolate y mantequilla) y ganó el evento.

Le gustaba jugar a las cartas en línea, usualmente en torneos que comenzaban justo después de la medianoche y terminaban justo antes de que saliera el sol. Cuando estaba ganando, podíamos oírlo reír o cantar y golpeando su escritorio. Cuando estaba perdiendo, lanzaba zapatos u otros objetos contra la pared. Aprendimos a dormir con sus alegrías y malos momentos. Es por eso que cuando hubo un gran terremoto una noche y todos en la ciudad saltaron de la cama y corrieron a las calles, nosotros dormimos toda la noche. Simplemente pensamos que era Marvin que estaba ganando o perdiendo otro torneo.

Él era muy generoso, estaba lleno de vida y tenía una buena palabra para todos.

Te vamos a extrañar, Marvelous. Alguien sugirió que tengamos un momento de silencio en tu honor en el Concurso de Cocina con Chile que tendremos en abril. Te va a gustar más un momento de mucho ruido. Quizás tengamos ambos. Descansa en paz hermano.

Kristine Berg, of Howling Success Dog Training and Island Pet Resort, will be opening a pet store soon in Bocas. Since moving to the area last year, Kris has been a huge asset to the community – arranging veterinarian visits, helping to organize the Spay/Panama sterilization clinic, offering dog obedience courses and educating local and foreign residents on all issues pertaining to pet ownership. She’s making a huge difference.

Barry Munro celebrated his big Five-O on Feb. 15 with a birthday bash at the Tropical Market. Typical of a Barry/Lili event, there was great food, live music, wild dancing and partying into the next day.

First Annual BESO Charity Fishing Tournament results

Danny Buchanan’s “Misplaced Texans” CARIBEPRO lived up to its name in Saturday’s charity fishing tournament. With team members Steve Hubbard, Mark Johnson and Jack Zumberge, fishing offshore in seas that ran at times to more than 12 feet, crosswinds and white-capped chop, Team Misplaced Texans finished first in two categories. Catching a wahoo nearly four feet long, several nice yellowfin and blackfin tunas, kingfish and bonito, the crew took first place for largest individual fish and first place in the pelagic category, winning nearly $600.00 in cash and sponsor prizes.

As for the inshore side of the tournament, Bob Martz and Mike Thompson won the reef category with nice Snook and Red Snapper taken from a “secret fishing hole” that neither would reveal the location of. All Bob would say is, “It’s down there somewhere,” while pointing to the southeast and smiling. Bob and Mike ended up winning nearly $500.00 in cash and sponsor prizes.

The tournament fishing started at 7:00 a.m. and by 9:00 a.m. most of the boats were working their chosen fishing grounds. Team Flaca was working the bank near the Zapatilla Keys. Lee Glaser was heading to Cusapin. J.B. Seligman’s Team Rooster Mike was dragging bait over the outer bank. Team Uff-DA and Team Paradise Dreams were trolling the nearly thousand-foot deep cobalt blue, several miles north of Bastimentos. The overall winning Team Misplaced Texans had positioned themselves in the 400-foot-plus deep water to the north and west of Cusapin and were pulling bait slowly toward the east. At about the same time Bob Martz and Mike Thompson had made their stealth run to Bob’s “secret fishing hole.”

The teams continued to fish, with those offshore taking a pounding, until as close to weigh-in time as possible they all made their runs to the Pickled Parrot weigh station for the judging and post-tournament party. At 4 p.m., with all boats back and all catches accounted for, tournament director Capt. Mike Durr of Team Paradise Dreams announced the winners and thanked the tournament sponsors: Bocas Offshore Sales and Service, The Pickled Parrot Bar and Restaurant, Banana Hill, Bohmfalks Bar and Paradise Dreams Resort. Mike also noted that more CARIBEPRO center console boats (including the overall winner) fished this rough water tournament than any other brand of boat.

Then the after-fishing party got started. Jorge and the Pickled Parrot crew prepared and served up food and the best cocktails and coldest beer in Bocas to tired fishermen and tournament well wishers. Sitting on the deck at the Pickled Parrot with a piña colada, listening to island music and watching the sun set over the mountains beyond the sea I couldn’t think of a better way to finish a sport fishing tournament, except maybe winning!

Starfish Reef: a one-of-a-kind conservation resort community

Jack and I fell in love in 2004 on the shores of Lake Travis in Austin, Texas, and were married there in May of 2005. Both of us were real estate investors looking for our next and best great adventure. Together we pursued our dream and we are happy to be here in Panama. We never knew we would end up as multi-tasking farmers growing chocolate and other tropical fruits while creating a beautiful oasis for people to cohabit with nature.

In February of 2006, Jack and I were elated purchase beautiful lush jungle/rainforest island property in Bocas del Toro. In 2007, we had the makings of a community with four villas near completion. Now, in 2008, our first guests have already come and gone.

We are located on Shepherd Island or Isla Pastor. This island is completely surrounded by a pristine reef which has thousands of colorful brittle stars in very bright colors of purple with yellow centerlines down each leg, or just the opposite: yellow with purple centerlines. The coral is even more colorful with shades of green, red, purple, blue, yellow, orange, etc. I have been snorkeling and diving in many places in the world but have never been lucky enough to have anything like this in my own front yard.

While I am floating and snorkeling this amazing place, Jack is hiking the trails of our 25-acre-plus rainforest making plans for its – and our – future. And, this is our dream . . . Jungle Jack, as he is known, is placing the 20+ fine homes of the first stage development on lots so as to have the utmost privacy with beautiful ocean, mountain, jungle, or combination views. This will be a community of like-minded friends – friends who love nature and all that it has to offer. And, did I mention we are on the lee side of the island? The sea is usually calm for swimming, snorkeling, floating, kayaking, diving, fishing and boating. The clarity of the water is magnificent. In addition, we have hiking trails and trails to accommodate golf carts and four-wheelers for transportation in the community and to easily access the higher altitude homes with their magnificent views.

Starfish Reef, a small island community, has been born. We now have the first four beautiful Caribbean Island villas for sale or rent on Shepherd Island. The villas are of high quality construction and were finished out with expansive glass/wood windows and doors, double walls, granite and tile countertops, high-end stainless appliances, combination cana fistula and M2 exterior construction, beautiful hardwood floors, peaked cedar bedroom ceilings for maximum air flow, fans and air conditioners throughout, ample closet space and storage. Each Villa is designed with rentals of individual rooms in mind so that absentee owners/investors can benefit with income from their villa. The accommodations are very comfortable with king- and queen-sized orthopedic mattresses. Luxury linens are supplied in oversized guest rooms with incredible views of the ocean, mountains and jungle. A pristine coral reef wall skirts the salt water swimming lagoon off the beautiful white sand beach. Cacao-to-Chocolate tours and rainforest jungle tours are offered onsite.

Everything has been carefully designed to blend with the natural surroundings. People have said they expected the forest to be cut down but were pleasantly surprised that our community is still in a very natural state. We have cut very few trees and our homes blend in with the natural landscape. We have restored it to a working cacao plantation which can only survive with a rainforest canopy.

Joellen Jeffers wins Cerutti Family Chocolate Competition

The Third Annual Cerutti Family Chocolate Competition was held at El Limbo Hotel/Restaurant on Feb. 14. This year there were 24 incredible entrants, all using Cerutti chocolate in their recipes. Having to choose one top winner was a daunting task for the judges but ultimately Joellen Jeffers won the $100 grand prize with her brownie parfait entitled Stairway to Heaven. Joellen was also the winner of the First Annual contest held in 2006. Marcia Bennett won in 2007.

Dave and Linda Cerutti, who already have one cookbook of chocolate-based recipes for sale (available at Super Gourmet, Starfish Coffee, Buena Vista Bar & Grill), plan to have another one out later this year which will include directions for making Joellen’s prize-winning, mouth-watering, heavenly delight.

The Ceruttis wish to thank the many people who helped put the event together to make it one of the top Bocas events of the year: Buena Vista Bar & Grill, El Limbo Hotel & Restaurant, the Jeffers, the participants, the judges and the young surfers (they know who they are!).

Joellen Jeffers gana la competencia de Chocolate de la Familia Cerutti

La Tercera Competencia Anual de Chocolate de la Familia Cerutti se celebró en el Hotel/Restaurante El Limbo el 14 de febrero. Este año hubo 24 participantes increíbles, los cuales todos utilizaron el chocolate Cerutti en sus recetas. Fue una tarea difícil para los jueces tener que elegir un ganador pero Joellen Jeffers ganó el gran premio de $100 con su parfait de brownie denominado Escalera al Cielo. Joellen también fue la ganadora del primer concurso anual celebrado en el 2006, Marcia Bennett ganó en el 2007.

Dave y Linda Cerutti, quienes ya tienen un libro de cocina de recetas con chocolate para la venta (se puede encontrar en el Super Gourmet, Starfish Coffee y Buena Vista Bar & Grill), planean sacar otro a finales de este año, el cual incluirá la receta para preparar el delicioso plato ganador de Joellen.

Government help for consumer dissatisfaction

The following is a letter written by Larry Shane, of Bocas, to the consumer protection office in David.

Sr. Ortega:

I am writing to commend you for the superb disposition by your office of my consumer complaint.

On 22 January, I went to your David office to register a complaint pertaining to $50 shoes purchased at a David store. The shoes had a factory defect, causing on both my feet an abrasion so severe that my feet bled after wearing the shoes for only twenty minutes. The store offered no satisfaction; no repair, exchange or refund. I told the store manager that I would complain to your office; she laughed, and told me to go ahead if I wished to waste my time.

Upon visiting your office, with no waiting for assistance, I was immediately interviewed by Lic. Jovana Valdes. Lic. Valdes recorded the facts, inspected the defective shoes, and observed my wounded feet. I assumed a report would be filed for investigation, and I would receive a finding at some distant future time, probably without a satisfactory solution. But at least, my protest might discourage the shoe store from more customer mistreatment.

However, without hesitation, Lic. Valdes phoned the shoe store, and spoke to the manager. After only a few minutes, the phone conference was completed. Lic. Valdes instructed me to return to the shoe store for new shoes. The shoe store exchanged the defective shoes for a different style of the same brand. My new shoes are a comfortable delight. Estupendo!

Estoy escribiendo para elogiar el excelente comportamiento que recibí de parte de usted y su oficina, respecto a una queja mía como consumidor.

El 22 de enero fui a su oficina en David para registrar una queja en relación con un par de $50 zapatos comprados en una tienda de David. Los zapatos tenían un defecto de fábrica, causando esto un grave rasguño en mis pies, los cuales sangraron después de llevar dichos zapatos durante solamente veinte minutos. La tienda donde hice la compra no me brindo ninguna reparación, intercambio o reembolso. Cuando le dije al encargado que me quejaría en su oficina; se rió y dijo: “vaya si desea malgastar su tiempo”.

Al visitar su oficina, sin esperar ayuda fui entrevistado inmediatamente por la Lic. Jovana Valdes. La Lic. Valdes grabo los hechos, inspeccionaron los zapatos defectuosos y observaron mis pies heridos. Supuse que un informe seria presentado para una investigación y luego yo recibiría una conclusión en un futuro distante, probablemente sin solución satisfactoria. Pero por lo menos mi protesta podría desanimar a la tienda de zapatos de más maltrato al cliente.

Sin embargo, sin titubear la Lic. Valdes telefoneo a la tienda y hablo con el administrador. Después de algunos minutos, la conferencia telefónica termino. La Lic. Valdez me indico que regresara a la tienda para adquirir unos zapatos nuevos. La tienda cambio los zapatos defectuosos por un nuevo estilo de la misma marca. Mis zapatos nuevos son muy confortables. Estupendo!

En Panamá, especialmente aquí en la frontera occidental, estoy sin palabras sobre la extorsión de comprar cosas defectuosas. He ignorado las fechas cercanas de expiración en los artículos comestibles. Usted me hizo justicia, imparcialidad, bondad, virtudes humanas que son rarezas en los negocios alrededor del mundo. After a long wait, the first national circuit of Surf Cup Tropix was held on Jan. 26 and 27.

We had the best waves and surfers in the country. It began on Saturday at 10 a.m. with our local surfers Piler, Chicho, Daniel, Juampi and the Sonero Brothers passing their first rounds in the first heats of the OPEN. Unfortunately, our friend Felipe didn’t have luck with his waves and couldn’t pass to the next round, but we all know that Felipe is a very good surfer and that luck is not always there. I couldn’t pass the first round OPEN either, maybe next time.

In the course of the day, everything was great. Our boys kept passing the rounds until we practically took over the awards. The results were the following:

Chicho won the JUNIOR category, after him Juampi in second and Piler in the third position.

Tania won the first place in the FEMALE category and her sister Angie took fourth place.

Juampi also got the third place in the OPEN category, being the only surfer in the competition to get two wins. I took the third place in the LONGBOARD category.

We at Tropix would like to thank all the competitors and the public in general that attended.

Also these past Feb. 16 and 17, the second competition of the National Circuit was held in Isla Grande, Province of Colon. Unfortunately, we didn’t have much representation from Bocas there – only Juampi, who again placed second in the JUNIOR category and reached the quarterfinals in the OPEN category. I took third place in LONGBOARD.

Good news: Chicho, Tania and Juampi have been selected to represent Panama in the Central American Surf Competition to be held at Playa Venao in March. I have been selected as team coach. We promise to do our best to make this title stay in Panama and the events won by Bocatorenos.

I would also like to invite individuals and businesses to help support the team so they can go to the competition. Bocas is the farthest away from most of the tournaments and it is expensive to travel and pay for accommodations for the whole team. Please help if you can – because Bocas is the home of champions.

Después de una larga espera finalmente el pasado 26 y 27 de enero se llevo a cabo la primera valida del circuito nacional de surf copa Tropix.

Contamos con el mejor nivel de olas y surfers del país, todo comenzó el sábado a las 10 a.m. de la mañana con los primeros heat de OPEN pasando sus primeras rondas varios de nuestros surfers locales: Piler, Chicho, el chino Daniel, Juampi y los Hermanos Sonero, lamentablemente nuestro amigo Felipe no contó con suerte en sus olas y no pudo pasar a la siguiente ronda, pero todos sabemos que Felipe tiene muy buen surf solo que la suerte no siempre esta con nosotros, yo tampoco pude pasar de la primera ronda OPEN será para la próxima.

Con el transcurso del día todo fue marchando muy bien nuestros muchachos siguieron pasando sus rondas hasta el punto en que prácticamente nos apoderamos de toda la premiación, los resultados fueron los siguientes.

Chicho gano la categoría JUNIOR, seguido de Juampi y Piler en la tercera posición.

Tania se adjudico el primer lugar de FEMENINO y su hermana Angie el cuarto lugar.

Juampi también se gano el tercer lugar de la categoría OPEN siendo el único surfer en la competencia en quedar en dos finales , finalmente yo también me quede con la tercera posición en la categoría LONGBOARD.

Nosotros en Tropix queremos dar las gracias a todos los competidores y al público en general que asistió ya que el comportamiento fue excelente.

También este pasado 16 y 17 de Febrero se realizo la segunda valida del circuito nacional en Isla Grande provincia de colon , lamentablemente no contamos con mucha representación Bocatoreña en esta etapa , solo Juampi que se quedo nuevamente con el segundo lugar de JUNIOR y ¼ de finales en OPEN, yo por mi parte una vez mas me quede con el tercer lugar en LONGBOARD.

La buena noticia es que tanto Chicho, Tania y Juampi han sido seleccionados para representar a Panamá en el Centroamericano de surf a efectuarse en playa Venao en el mes de Marzo yo por mi parte he sido seleccionado como Coach del equipo, les prometemos que haremos lo imposible para dejar ese titulo Centroamericano aquí en Panama y por un Bocatoreño.

También quisiera aprovechar para invitar a la empresa privada a que colaboren con estos chicos para que puedan llegar a las competencias, nosotros aquí en Bocas somos los que estamos mas lejos de todas las locaciones donde se efectúan las competencias, es muy costoso poder llegar y costear la estadía de todo un equipo así que traten de apoyar un poco mas que ya sabemos que los campeones están aquí en Bocas.

Keeping your dogs safe

Several times since I moved to Bocas I have heard of dogs being stolen or possibly poisoned in the islands. It does not come as a surprise: theft and poisoning of strays is common anywhere people let their dogs roam.

Stray dogs is a term that refers not only to "feral" dogs (those without owners) and "fractious dogs" (dogs which have owners but are not properly cared for), but also to animals that are cared for by their owners but allowed to roam public and others private property without the owner present.

Owners who allow their dogs to do this see no harm in it. They believe the animal "needs to run free" and we all know that it must be much easier to let a dog roam, saving the costs of fencing and training. These dogs also get to "socialize" with other dogs. These are only a few of the excuses people have given me.

Most populated areas have laws or regulations that prevent animals from roaming free. In these areas, owners may face heavy fines if their dog is found running stray.

There are no laws or regulations like this in Bocas.

What people don't understand is that these laws are not created just to pick on people or to generate revenue; they are enforced for the safety of the animals, residents and tourists.

The hard truth is that if you let your dog roam you might as well put a sign in your yard telling everyone that you do not care about your dog.

Most of us know how often dogs are hit by cars here. Those who don't know can ask me because I am the one who gets called for only a small fraction of them.

As for those who live on an island without cars, ask me about the dogs that are stolen for breeding and resale. Many residents have seen unknown people actually approach dogs, place leashes on them and walk away with them in broad daylight. You say this would never happen to your dog? That is or she is too smart for that? I think these people may be a tad bit smart also.

Think it's important for your dog to go outside and play with its friends? Dogs without owners present will pack. Even the sweetest little dog will show a completely different personality when allowed to pack with other dogs. I have seen dogs that have never shown any aggression (according to their owners) pack with other dogs and harass people, kill cats or other dogs and cause major injury to other living things.

What about the dogs that are found dead or washed up on shores from possible poisonings? Many people do not appreciate dogs coming onto their property, barking or sniffing at them as they walk, or defecating /urinating in their yards. It's not difficult to take rat poison and place it in a piece of meat. Unless your dog is trained to absolutely not pick up anything on the ground, your dog may be in trouble. Antifreeze is very tasty to dogs, and it too is a killer.

Many people are afraid of dogs, and many people in this country carry machetes. This is a very common weapon for protecting oneself from what may be thought of as an aggressive dog or to permanently quiet an annoying barking dog.

It is more trouble to keep our dogs with us or confined to our own property. But if we love our dogs and want to keep them safe, we do it. All dogs need exercise so it might be time to get off the couch or take 45 minutes out of our day and start those walks.

There are very simple ways to teach your dog to walk properly on a leash. It’s good for your dog and great for you too. Walking dogs helps them stay better behaved, keeps them social and keeps you in shape. If you are not able to walk your dog for physical reasons, you can hire someone to walk them for you.

Just because there are no laws here does not mean our dogs are any safer. Know what your dog is doing and where he or she is at all times. It's not the dog we do not trust, it's the things outside of our control we have to watch out for.

Mantener seguros a tus perros

Varias veces desde que me mudé a Bocas, he escuchado de robos de perros o posible envenenamiento en estas islas. No me sorprende: robo y envenenamiento de perros es común donde la gente deja que sus perros vaguen por las calles.

Perros callejeros es un término que no sólo se refiere a los perros “salvajes” (aquellos que no tienen dueños) y “perros revoltosos” (perros que tienen dueño pero no tienen cuidado adecuado), sino también a los animales que reciben cuidado de sus dueños pero también se los deja vagar públicamente y en otras propiedades privadas sin estar presente el dueño.

Los dueños que dejan que esto ocurra no le ven nada de malo. Ellos creen que el animal “necesita estar libre” y todos sabemos que debe ser más fácil dejar a un perro vagar por ahí, así se ahorra el costo de colocar una cerca y entrenar al perro. Estos perros también “socializan” con otros perros. Estas son sólo algunas de las excusas que me da la gente.

Las áreas más populares tienen leyes o regulaciones que previenen a los animales vagar por las calles. En estas áreas, los dueños pueden ser multados si su perro es encontrado corriendo por la calle.

No hay leyes ni regulaciones como estas en Bocas.

Lo que la gente no entiende es que estas leyes no son creadas para meterse con la gente solamente o para generar ingresos; se aplican por la seguridad de los animales, residentes y turistas.

La cruda realidad es que si dejas a tu perro vagar por las calles, puedes también poner un cartel en tu jardín que diga que no te interesa tu perro.

La mayoría de nosotros sabemos cuan seguidos los perros son atropellados por carros. Aquellos que no lo saben pueden preguntarme porque es a mí a la que algunos llaman.

Y aquellos que viven en islas sin carros, pregúntenme sobre los perros que son robados para ser reproducidos y vendidos. Muchos residentes han visto a gente desconocida acercarse a los perros, ponerles correa y huir con ellos en plena luz del día. ¿Dices que nunca le va a pasar a tu perro? ¿Qué él o ella es muy inteligente para que eso le pase? Yo creo que estas personas son un poquito más astutas.

¿Piensas que es importante para tu perro ir afuera a jugar con sus amigos? Los perros sin los dueños presentes se juntan en manadas. Hasta el perro más cariñoso mostrará una personalidad totalmente distinta cuando se le permite que se junte con otros perros. He visto perros que nunca dieron señal alguna de agresividad (según sus dueños) juntarse con otros perros y atacar gente, matar gatos u otros perros y causar grandes heridas a cualquier cosa viviente.

¿Qué pasa con los perros que son encontrados muertos o arrastrados hasta la costa por posible envenenamiento? A muchas personas no les agrada que los perros entren a sus propiedades, les ladren o huelan mientras caminan o que defequen u orinen en sus jardines. No es difícil tomar veneno para ratas y colocarlo dentro de un pedazo de carne. Al menos que tu perro sea entrenado para no recoger absolutamente nada del piso, tu perro puede estar en problemas. El anticongelante es muy sabroso para los perros y, también, los mata.

Mucha gente le tiene miedo a los perros y muchas personas en este país cargan machetes. Esta es un arma muy común para protección personal de lo que se pueda considerar un perro agresivo o para callar permanentemente a un perro que molesta con sus ladridos.

Cuesta más trabajo mantener a nuestros perros con nosotros o confinados en nuestra propiedad. Pero si amamos a nuestros perros y queremos mantenerlos seguros, lo hacemos. Todos los perros necesitan hacer ejercicio entonces puede ser el momento de levantarse del sofá y tomar 45 minutos de nuestro día y comenzar a caminar.

Hay formas simples de enseñarle a tu perro a pasear correctamente con correa. Es bueno para tu perro y para ti también. Pasear a los perros los ayuda a tener un mejor comportamiento, ser sociales y mantenerse en forma. Si no puedes pasearlo por razones físicas, puedes contratar a alguien para que lo haga por ti.

Sólo porque no hay leyes aquí no significa que nuestros perros están más seguros. Estate alerta de lo que tu perro está haciendo y dónde está en todo momento.

No es que no confiamos en el perro, sino que hay que tener cuidado con las cosas que están fuera de nuestro control.
