Over the years Lin has worked hard to fulfill her dream of creating a tropical garden. She made forays into the rainforests and mountains where she discovered and gathered more plants, and further increased her collection through purchases from nurseries on the mainland. Although Lin has no formal botanical training, she has created a magnificent garden with large collections of heleconias, gingers, palms, flowering trees, fruit trees, spices and ornamentals. New plants are constantly being added to the medley. Dave and their local workers share her passionate enthusiasm and together they have crafted a place of lasting beauty which they now invite all lovers of tropical nature to see and enjoy.
Visitors enter the botanical garden beneath two Flame of the Forest trees (Delonix Regia) and step into a large rancho that serves as a Visitors Center. This center is also available for rent as a venue for meetings, parties and celebrations, including intimate wedding ceremonies.
The guided tour begins at the rancho along a magical path that leads the visitor around the palm garden where stately Traveler Palms stand tall alongside Triangle Palms, Talipot Palms, Yellow Latans and Mexican Palmettos. The path winds through an area replete with sealing Wax Palms, Pygmy Date and Queen palms, with different Pandanus and Alocasias. Guava, Noni, and Rainbow Eucalyptus trees grow among the Cycads, Ribbon Fan Palms, Majesty and Fishtail Palms.
A jasmine-covered pergola leads to another archway rounded with the sunny yellow flowers of Allamanda cathartica. The entire hillside is bright with red and pink gingers and assorted colored hibiscus that flower year round. There is the constant and exciting presence of hummingbirds and butterflies which are drawn to the nectar of these exquisite tropical flowers. The visitor continues through a cool tunnel of red and pink torch gingers onto a shady hillside of heleconias to a site where a 100-year-old well is being resurrected.
From the shady path, visitors may see the resident troop of howler monkeys, often with their babies, and may also espy sloths and iguanas. Along the trail, tiny colorful frogs can be seen, hopping hurriedly among the fallen leaves.
Two fish-ponds are being created. At present, they are home to a few caimans and many species of frogs and dragonflies. Soon, the caimans will be transplanted to other ponds on the island and the garden ponds will be stocked with freshwater fish and shrimp and the surface covered with water lilies. The ponds are in an idyllic location and surrounded by many palms, including Cuban Royal Palms, Fiji Fan Palms and Lady Palms as well as cycads, pandanus and the blazing colors of tropical flowers.
Garden visitors will also see many fruit varieties including bananas, pineapples, passion fruit, soursop, sweetsop, franadilla, papayas, mangoes, tamarind, mammee, guava, starfruit, genipa, Malay Apple, Manon Chino, breadfruit, sea almond, achiote and nutmeg.
Due to the abundance of fruit and flowers, a large variety of birds reside at the farm or come to visit. Parrots, tanagers, woodpeckers, orioles and flycatchers abound. One may be lucky enough to see the exquisitely, small nests of the hummingbirds or at the other end of the scale, the three- to four-foot-long pendulous nests of the Montezuma Oropendolas.
Lin and Dave invite Bocas residents and tourists to take a tour and bathe in the beauty and sensory delights of Finca Los Monos – and enjoy for themselves the charm of tropical flowers, fruit trees, palms and rainforest fauna.

I’ve been reading in several Panama publications that six men on the FBI Most Wanted List may be visiting or residing in Panama. Rewards (up to $100,000) are being offered for information leading to the arrest of any of these criminals, most of whom are known pedophiles. While most of the other publications offered only names (which are easily changed) I took these photos off the FBI website so our readers can be on the lookout. – Allene Blaker

Yep, it’s almost time! the Bocas Educational Service Organization (BESO) 7th Annual Auction is scheduled for Feb. 26, 2008 at the Bocas Beach Club. It’s already listed on your BESO 2008 Bocas Calendar! This year, instead of the usual sit-down dinner, we’re simplifying the evening by serving heavy hors d’oeuvres (included in the $15.00 admission ticket price). Pay-as-you-go drinks will be available at the bar. And, of course, there’ll be lots of fun and laughter and goodies to take home. This is BESO’s major fundraising event with every dime of the proceeds going to improve educational services throughout our island territory. BESO’s Annual Auction has an amazing fundraising track record:

Oops, that last figure in the list hasn’t materialized just yet. But that’s our goal for 2008! This year we’re shooting for the stars!
And the kids are counting on you to help make it happen. BESO needs donations and BESO needs volunteers – lots and lots of both. We’re looking for some big ticket items for the Feature Auction. Last year, for example, we auctioned off donated new and antique furniture, exquisite paintings, airline tickets to any U.S. destination, gardening services, a pig picking for 10 on Cayo Agua, a 3-day houseboat cruise, guest nights at luxury resorts, and much, much more – even lunch with the delightful 2003 Miss Universe. We need items for the Silent Auction, too: jewelry, handicrafts, paintings, housewares, discounts at various Bocas businesses, clothing, tools, plants, restaurant dinners. And more items for the Raffle: t-shirts, books, hot sauce, gift wrap, bottles of wine – you name it!
Check your closets, lockers, and bodegas for those really good items that you just never use – somebody else might bid big bucks for them. Make one of your handicraft specialties. Offer a service. Even if you don’t have something to donate, we’re betting that you know someone who does. Look through the business cards you have stashed away (including the ones from Panama City, David, wherever), check your e-mail lists and phone directories, then ask for contributions. Be creative!
So that we can plan space and prepare auction materials, please let us know ASAP what you will be donating or what you’ve collected for donation by e-mailing us a note. Donated items can be taken to the Buena Vista Restaurant any time, but at least one day before and not on the day of the auction to give organizers time for transport and display. To avoid storage difficulties at the Buena Vista, it would be best if really large items are delivered only on the day before the Auction.
Bocas restaurants: This year we need donations of heavy hors d’oeuvres, tables, and chairs. Can we count on you? Let us know via e-mail.

¡Sí, ya casi es el momento! La séptima subasta de la Organización de Servicios Educativos de Bocas (BESO) se programó para el 26 de febrero de 2008 en el Bocas Beach Club. Ya está escrito en tu calendario 2008 de BESO. Este año, en lugar de la usual cena en mesas, simplificaremos la noche sirviendo fuertes entremeses (incluidos en los $15.00 del tiquete de entrada). Se venderán bebidas en el bar. Y, por supuesto, habrá mucha diversión, risas y cositas para llevarse a casa. Este es el evento para recaudar fondos más importante de BESO, donde cada centavo se utilizará para mejorar los servicios educativos de nuestro territorio insular. La subasta anual de BESO tiene un récord increíble en la recaudación de fondos:

Dengue fever cases on the rise in Central America
Recent reports by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and other health agencies warn that certain areas of the Caribbean and Latin America are having some of the worst outbreaks of dengue fever in decades. The figures support the warnings: 186 people have died (as of mid-November) and more than 640,000 cases have been reported.
Dengue symptoms develop suddenly eight to ten days after a bite from an infected Aedes mosquito. Symptoms may include headache, fever, chills, nausea and joint and muscle pain. The skeletal and muscular pain is often severe, causing the disease often to be called breakbone fever. Other symptoms may include bleeding (from the nose, mouth, and gums), excessive thirst and difficulty in breathing. Often, a rash may appear a few days after the onset of fever. While dengue fever might run its course in ten days, complete recovery can take up to a month. As noted above, the most severe cases can be fatal.
Treatment consists of bed rest, drinking plenty of clear liquids and use of pain relievers such as acetaminophen. Aspirin should not be taken as it can interfere with blood clotting and therefore increase bleeding risk.
The World Health Organization suggests the following for dengue prevention:
- Keep mosquitoes from biting you, especially at night (use mosquito nets, window screens).
- Eliminate places around your home or business where mosquitoes breed (used tires, empty bottles or cans, flower pots, buckets, etc.). Clearing all standing water around homes and workplaces is imperative. Most species of mosquitoes reproduce by laying their eggs in water. This means that ANY containment of water can be a breeding ground.
- Spray insecticides on your home’s walls to kill adult mosquitoes that come inside.
- Wear long-sleeved clothing if outdoors, or use insect repellent (read precautions for use on children).
Hard to believe that some people are still using used tires to "protect" young trees from leafcutter ants. Each tire creates a mosquito breeding ground which can potentially produce hundreds of thousands of mosquitoes in a few weeks' time. This Drago property alone has at least a dozen tires being used this way.

Aunque la fiebre puede pasar a los diez días, la recuperación completa puede tomar un mes. Como se señaló anteriormente, los casos más severos pueden ser fatales.
El tratamiento consiste en descanso en cama, tomar muchos líquidos claros y el uso de pastillas para calmar el dolor, por ejemplo acetaminofen. La aspirina no se debe tomar ya que puede interferir con la coagulación de la sangre y así incrementar el riesgo de sangrado.
La Organización Mundial de la Salud sugiere lo siguiente para la prevención del dengue:
- evitar que los mosquitos le piquen, especialmente de noche (usar redes y mallas contra mosquitos)
- eliminar lugares de criaderos de mosquitos cerca de su casa o negocio (ruedas usadas, botellas o latas vacías, floreros, cubos, etc…) Es imperativo limpiar el agua estancada cerca de su hogar o lugar de trabajo. La mayoría de las especies de mosquitos se reproducen al poner sus huevos en agua. Esto significa que CUALQUIER contención de agua puede ser un criadero.
- Rociar insecticidas en las paredes de su casa para matar al mosquito adulto que entra.
- Usar ropa de mangas largas si se está afuera o usar repelente de mosquitos (leer las precauciones para el uso en los niños)

Something in the water?
In a two-week period beginning Nov. 27, 2007, five Bocas couples brought healthy and beautiful babies into the world. If anyone has been considering opening a babysitting business in the area, now seems like a good time. Congratulations to all the couples and their families on the new arrivals.

Scary boat story

Tuesday, Oct. 16, dawned bright and beautiful. I decide to go four miles offshore to the seamount to search for yellowfin and wahoo.
About a mile outside the reef I saw some bait trying to get out of the water away from some unknown predator(s). I slowed down, got the net out and set up a nice drift, hopefully through the bait ball.
As bait is apt to do, it stayed just outside my range. I put the boat in gear and followed the bait, still ready to throw. At the last minute the bait turned a little so I turned the wheel about a fifth of a turn and stepped to the rail. This happened at the same time as an odd wave hit the boat and the next thing I knew, I was in the water with my boat pulling away.
I immediately stripped the net from my wrist, shed my Croc shoes and started swimming like hell to try to catch the boat. So close, but no luck. It dawned on me that the boat had a little turn to it so I immediately reversed direction and swam, possibly, for my life. I don't know how long I swam, but all of a sudden I looked up and the boat was heading right for me. I swung an arm up and grabbed the port rail. I swung my right leg up, too.
Unfortunately I was too tired to pull myself into the boat. I rested for a bit, then decided to let myself down the rail towards the stern. At the end of the cockpit I ran out of handholds, but then I noticed the Bimini top folded back against the poling platform. I grabbed it to further let myself back and the top disattached on the starboard side. Even with it only attached on one side, I was able to swing around and grab the trim tab cylinder, then grab the poling platform with my right hand. Still completely exhausted, I dragged along like this for quite some time trying to recover. Trying not to become chunk bait, I was able to bring my right foot up to the ledge of the lower unit and my left foot up to the trim tab. From here I was able to heave myself (barely) onto the back deck. I laid there for quite some time trying to recover enough strength to even sit up.
I won't even try to relay all the thoughts that have gone through my head since then, but suffice it to say I'm very glad to still be among the living. I hope this can be used as a precautionary tale as WE MAY NO LONGER BE BULLETPROOF.

Historia de miedo de un bote

Fue el martes 16 de octubre, el amanecer era brillante y hermoso. Decidí ir cuatro millas de la costa hacia el monte marino a buscar atún y wahoo.
Aproximadamente una milla fuera del arrecife vi a un cebo tratando de salir del agua lejos de algún depredador desconocido. Disminuí la velocidad, saqué la red y la tiré al a deriva.
Como me imaginé, el cebo estaba justo fuera de mi alcance. Puse el motor en marcha y seguí al cebo, todavía preparado para lanzar. En el último minuto el cebo se volvió un poco, entonces giré el timón un quinto y me acerqué a la baranda. Esto sucedió al mismo momento que una ola golpeó el bote y lo siguiente que supe fue que había caído al agua mientras mi bote se alejaba.
Inmediatamente saqué la red de mi muñeca, me saqué mis Crocs zapatos y comencé a nadar como loco tratando de alcanzar mi bote. Estaba tan cerca, pero no tuve suerte. Me di cuenta que mi bote giró un poco entonces revertí la dirección inmediatamente y nadé, si era posible, por mi vida. No se cuanto tiempo nadé, pero de la nada miré hacia arriba y vi que el bote se dirigía hacia mí. Saqué mi brazo y agarré la baranda y subí mi pierna derecha también.
Desafortunadamente, estaba muy cansado para subir mi cuerpo al bote. Descansé un momento y luego decidí dejar mi cuerpo bajo la baranda hacia la popa. Al final de la cabina ya no había de donde agarrarse pero luego me di cuenta que la parte superior del Bimini se había doblado hacia la plataforma del poste. Lo agarré para poder volver y la parte superior se separó en el lado del estribor. Aunque estuviera pegado de un solo lado, pude balancearme y agarrar el cilindro, luego agarrarme de la plataforma del poste con mi mano derecha. Todavía exhausto, me arrastré así por un tiempo tratando de recuperarme. Al tratar de no convertirme en un pedazo de cebo, pude subir mi pie derecho al borde de la unidad inferior y mi pie izquierdo a la punta. Desde aquí pude empujar mi cuerpo (apenas) hacia la cubierta trasera. Me quedé allí un tiempo tratando de recuperarme lo suficiente para poder sentarme.
Ni siquiera voy a tratar de contar los pensamientos que pasaron por mi mente desde entonces, nada más que estoy feliz de estar vivo todavía. Espero que esto pueda ser utilizado como cuento de prevención ya que PUEDE QUE NO SEAMOS MÁS A PRUEBA DE BALAS.

U.S. bank loans now available in Panama
For the first time in Panama history, a U.S. bank has begun offering U.S. Citizens and Residents the opportunity to acquire U.S. Mortgages for residential property purchased in Panama. The program’s official inception date was in September of 2007.
Until now, U.S. Citizens and Residents have had no choice but to either apply for a loan with a local bank, an often time-consuming and uncertain process, or would need to pay cash (from their personal savings or equity line) when purchasing in Panama.
As many have discovered, obtaining a local loan isn’t always a walk in the park! Not only is the application and approval process much more time consuming with the local banks, but local loans are based on a floating rate with NO CAPS, terms can be shortened due to the national 75-year age limit, and additional premiums are required to cover the life insurance required by the local banks - an insurance where the bank is the beneficiary.
Loans offered through Mortgage International Brokers (MIB) are 30-year loans with no age limit, with no life insurance requirement, and even though the rates are adjustable, they offer fixed periods of up to seven years, with caps in place to insure against interest rate increase. Other advantages are that the mortgage interest on these loans may be tax deductible and all customer service is handled by customer service representatives in the United States. Perhaps best of all, your loan can be closed in five to ten business days from the moment all required documents are received as opposed to often months-long waits with the local banks.
Mortgage International Brokers (MIB) opened its first office in downtown Panama City, Panama in October at the World Trade Center. They are currently taking applications for both purchases and refinances. If you have not yet settled on your dream property, contact them beforehand for a pre-approval letter indicating the amount for which you would be approved. All loans will be underwritten in the United States.
Needless to say, this is very exciting news for U.S. Citizens and Residents looking to purchase a home, second home, apartments, condos, etc. in Panama. Those who have already financed their desired homes now have the option of refinancing, with cashout, to a U.S. loan backed by an FDIC insured lender, with all the accompanying benefits.

Hasta ahora, los ciudadanos y residentes de los Estados Unidos al comprar en Panamá, no tenían otra opción más que aplicar por un préstamo con un banco local (usualmente un proceso incierto y que llevaba mucho tiempo), o pagar en efectivo (directo de sus cuentas de ahorro o patrimonio).
Como ya debes saber, obtener un préstamo local no siempre es un paseo en el parque. No sólo el proceso de solicitud y aprobación lleva mucho tiempo con los bancos locales, si no que los préstamos locales se basan en tasas fluctuantes, SIN TOPES, y son términos que pueden acortarse debido al límite nacional de 75 años de edad y el requerimiento de primas adicionales para cubrir el seguro de vida requerido por los bancos locales (un seguro donde el banco es el beneficiario).
Por otro lado, los préstamos ofrecidos por los Agentes Internacionales de Préstamos (iniciales en inglés MIB) son de 30 años sin límite de edad y sin requerir seguros de vida y hasta las tasas son regulables, ofrecen períodos fijos de hasta siete años, con topes que aseguran que las tasas de interés no van a incrementar. Otras ventajas son que el interés del préstamo puede ser deducible de impuestos y el servicio al cliente es manejado por representantes del servicio al cliente de los Estados Unidos. Quizás lo mejor de todo es que tu préstamo se puede cerrar entre cinco y diez días desde el momento que todos los documentos necesarios se recibieron, contrario a la espera de meses con los bancos locales.
MIB abrió su primera oficina en el centro de la ciudad de Panamá en octubre en el World Trade Center. Actualmente están tomando aplicaciones para compra y refinanciamiento. Si todavía no te has establecido en la casa de tus sueños, contáctalos de antemano para obtener una carta de pre-aprobación que indique la suma que te será financiada. Todos los préstamos serán suscritos en los Estados Unidos.

How many dogs and cats do we have in Bocas?

Animals are great at reproducing. When researching the subject of pet overpopulation, one frequently finds the statement that “over the course of six years, one female dog and her offspring can theoretically produce 67,000 dogs,” and that “over the course of seven years, one female cat and her offspring can theoretically produce 420,000 cats.”
While these numbers are a mathematical exercise, not a biological reality, they are used to make a point. (Actual studies taking into account average birth rates, survival rates and life expectancy of feral cats indicate that “Realistically, over 12 years, one unspayed female, with all her unspayed female offspring, can be expected to be responsible for over 3200 kittens if there is no human intervention.” In Bocas these numbers are higher because we are feeding and maintaining many of the strays, therefore they live longer and produce more offspring.
But the bottom line is the same. There are a lot of animals out there, and they are multiplying.
Spaying or Neutering Is Good for Your Pet
- Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.
- Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat.
- Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle. Mammary cancer is the #1 cancer in female dogs and the #3 cancer in female cats.
- Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease. Testicular cancer is the #2 cancer in male dogs.
Spaying or Neutering Is Good for You
- Spaying and neutering makes pets better, more affectionate companions.
- Neutering cats makes them less likely to spray and mark territory.
- Spaying a dog or cat eliminates her heat cycle. The breeding cycle lasts an average of six to 12 days, often twice a year, in dogs and an average of six to seven days, three or more times a year, in cats.
- Unsterilized animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than do those who have been spayed or neutered.
- Spaying and neutering can make pets less likely to bite. One study I conducted in the United States found that over 85% of the dogs responsible for serious bites to humans were initiated by unsterilized male dogs.
- Neutering makes pets less likely to roam neighborhoods, run away, or get into fights with other dogs.
Owning a “pretty” or “smart” animal is not a reason to breed them. We have too many animals in Bocas that are not being cared for. Be a responsible pet owner. Have your pets spayed or neutered.

Cuando se investiga sobre la sobrepoblación de las mascotas, usualmente encontramos que “en el curso de seis años una perra y su cría pueden producir teóricamente 67,000 perros”, y que “en el curso de siete años una gata y su cría pueden producir teóricamente 420,000 gatos”.
Mientras que estos números son un ejercicio matemático, no son una realidad biológica y se utilizan para probar algo. (Estudios verdaderos que tienen en cuenta el promedio de los índices de nacimiento, supervivencia y esperanza de vida de gatos salvajes indican que “realmente, en el curso de doce años, una hembra que no fue esterilizada con su cría no esterilizada, se espera que sean responsables por 3200 gatitos, si no hay intervención humana”. En Bocas, estos números son más altos porque estamos alimentando y manteniendo a mucho de los callejeros, de esta manera ellos viven más tiempo y producen más crías.
Pero la realidad es la misma. Hay muchos animales allí y se están multiplicando.
La esterilización o castración es buena para tu mascota
- La esterilización y castración ayuda a los perros y gatos a vivir por más tiempo y a tener una vida más saludable.
- La esterilización y castración puede eliminar o reducir la incidencia de un número de problemas de salud que pueden ser difíciles o caros de tratar.
- La esterilización elimina la posibilidad de cáncer uterino o de ovario y disminuye bastante la incidencia de cáncer de mama, particularmente cuando tu mascota es esterilizada antes de su primer ciclo menstrual. El cáncer mamario es el número uno en las perras y número tres en las gatas.
- La castración elimina el cáncer testicular y disminuye la incidencia de enfermedades en la próstata. El cáncer testicular es el número dos en los perros.
La esterilización o castración es buena para ti
- La esterilización y castración hace que las mascotas sean una mejor compañía y más afectuosa.
- El castrar gatos hace menos probable que marquen territorio.
- El esterilizar a una perra o gata elimina el celo. El ciclo de cría dura entre seis y doce días, usualmente dos veces al año en perros y un promedio de seis a siete días, tres o más veces al año en gatos.
- Animales que no fueron esterilizados manifiestan usualmente más problemas de comportamiento y temperamento que aquellos que sí lo fueron.
- La esterilización y castración puede hacer que las mascotas muerdan menos. Un estudio que hice en los Estados Unidos demostró que más del 85% de los perros responsables de mordidas a humanos serias fueron realizadas por perros machos no esterilizados.
- La castración hace que las mascotas vagueen menos por los vecindarios, huyan o peleen con otros perros.
Tener un animal “lindo” o “inteligente” no es una razón para reproducirlo. Tenemos demasiados animales en Bocas a los cuales no se los está cuidando. Se un dueño de mascota responsable. Esteriliza y castra a tus mascotas.
