Not long after I formed the I Spear Lionfish organization, I received a few reports from community members that someone was going around Bocas saying our efforts were wasted and that the lionfish problem would take care of itself. I dismissed those reports because I knew person in question was not an expert on the subject. And while I wasn't either, I was spending most of my spare time on the Internet reading about the lionfish invasion, where it began, how it spread, how people have been trying to stop it, what worked and what didn't. I've been writing other organizations and individuals, dive shop owners, scientists and restaurateurs in all parts of the Caribbean.

I've learned this:

"Unknown in the Americas 30 years ago, lionfish have multiplied at a rate that is almost unheard of in marine history." *

And this:

"Some experts believe that lionfish are so widespread that their effect on the ecosystems of the Western Atlantic will be almost impossible to reverse. Still, some people are determined to try." *

Something else I've learned over the years: There are two kinds of people, Lifters and Leaners. That for every shovel plunging into the ground there are 20 others standing upright with someone leaning on them.

Kurt Carson is a Lifter.

He came to Bocas six years ago from Texas and spends much of his time diving for old bottles. Last year, while diving in the Barco Hundido area, he spotted a lionfish for the first time. He recognized it because he'd read an article about lionfish by Jon Schneiderman, of Bocas Water Sports, which had been published in the Bocas Breeze.

In February, Kurt heard of the I Spear Lionfish organization and looked it up online. After reading what was posted there he had a new mission. From that day on he's spent almost every free afternoon in the water along the town waterfront. People see him snorkeling at the surface, holding a spear in one hand and a rope in the other. Attached to the other end of the rope is an innertube with a bucket settled snugly inside. This contraption follows along behind Kurt as he makes his way up and down the coast.

He spears lionfish, drops them in the bucket and goes back for more. He keeps track of how many he catches each day. When this issue went to press, he was up to 131.

Jon Schneiderman has armed all his employees with spearguns. Starfleet Scuba's divers spear lionfish and have even taken clients on hunts when asked. I receive photos nearly every day of lionfish speared or netted by residents, fishermen, snorkelers and divers.

Lifters all, determined to try.

Poco tiempo después de haber formado la organización I Spear Lionfish, recibí un par de reportes de parte de miembros de la comunidad sobre alguien que estaba diciendo alrededor de Bocas que nuestros esfuerzos eran en vano y que el problema del pez león se resolvería por sí mismo. No le di importancia a estos reportes porque sabía que la persona en cuestión no era un experto en el tema. Y como yo tampoco lo era, pasé la mayor parte de mi tiempo libre en internet leyendo sobre la invasión de peces leones, dónde comenzó, cómo se expandió, cómo la gente ha tratado de detenerla, qué funcionaba y qué no. He escrito a otras organizaciones e individuos, propietarios de tiendas de buceo, científicos y restauradores en todas partes del Caribe.

Aprendí esto:

“Siendo desconocidos en las Américas 30 años atrás, los peces leones se han multiplicado a un índice que es casi insólito en la historia marina”.*

Y esto:

“Algunos expertos creen que los peces leones están tan expandidos que su efecto en los ecosistemas del Atlántico Occidental será casi imposible de revertir. De todas maneras, algunas personas están resueltas a intentarlo”.*

Otra cosa que he aprendido con los años: hay dos clases de personas, Levantadores y Echados. Por cada pala cavando en la tierra, hay 20 otros de pie con alguien apoyado en ellos.

Jon Schneiderman ha armado a todo su personal con arpones. Los buzos de Starfleet Scuba arponean peces leones y hasta han llevado a clientes en sus cazas cuando se lo pidieron. Recibo fotos de residentes, pescadores, personas que hacen snorkel y buzos casi todos los días de peces leones arponados o en redes.

I sent a notice out to everyone on our Bocas mailing list and immediately got many responses. All who wrote were happy to see that such a ban was in place; most wrote it should have happened sooner; some thought it should last longer than four months. Lorelei, of the Super Gourmet, wrote to say the ban also included crabs.

Adam Della Rocca, manager of Isla Popa Resort, wrote that he has been educating the area fishermen about lobsters since he moved here. He would only buy large lobsters and would not buy any at all from a fisherman who had small lobsters mixed with large ones in his cayuco. When one fisherman pulled up to the resort dock with lobsters and a dead sea turtle, he banished the man for good.

Most of the restaurants, fishermen and markets are complying with the regulation. I am receiving reports that a few are not. I have been asked by many how and who to contact when they see someone catching, selling or serving lobsters. I don't know. But I'm keeping a list in my office and will gladly turn it over to the proper authorities if/when they contact me.

Lo primero que escuché sobre la veda de langostas en el lado caribeño de Panamá fue el 3 de mayo cuando Jim Kimball de Tranquilo Bay me envió un mensaje sobre el tema. Él recién se había enterado. La veda comenzó el 1ro. de marzo (continuando hasta el 30 de junio) pero nadie en el archipiélago estaba informado al respecto.

No fue transmitido en la televisión ni en la radio, no había oficiales en los restaurantes, negocios ni mercados de mariscos explicando la nueva regulación. Los pescadores locales seguían acercándose a los muelles con sus cayucos llenos de langostas.

Envié una nota a todos en nuestra lista de correos electrónicos de Bocas e inmediatamente obtuve muchas respuestas.

Todos aquellos que escribieron estaban felices de ver que dicha veda era efectiva; la mayoría escribió que debía haber ocurrido antes; algunos pensaban que debía durar más de cuatro meses. Lorelei, del Super Gourmet, escribió para decir que la veda también incluía a los cangrejos.

Adam Della Rocca, gerente del Resort Isla Popa, escribió que había estado educando a los pescadores del área sobre las langostas desde que se mudó aquí. Él sólo compra de las grandes y no compra langostas de un pescador que tenga a las pequeñas mezcladas con las grandes en su cayuco. When I was first researching lionfish on the Internet, I came across www.lionfishhunter.com and learned what Maurice "Mojo" White has beeen doing about an invasion of lionfish in the Bahamas. From his website:

"I am an avid free diver who has been an integral part of the island of Eleuthera, Bahamas since 1989. About two years ago I was diving at a favorite spot when I noticed a couple of lionfish for the first time. I thought to myself "how rare" this sighting was. Now they are everywhere. Subsequently I have done much research and found that these fish have no natural predators and are non-indigenous, prolific, and highly destructive to the eco system. My new mission in life is to inform the public and activate hunters to go out and kill as many of these fish as possible. This blog will serve as an information gathering site for this mission."

Maurice has speared hundreds of lionfish and never been stung. In his words, "They just sit there, so learn not to stick yourself and you'll be alright."

I learned a lot of things from his site but didn't see any blogs posted since November, 2009. So I wrote him and we've been in close communication since. Below are our notes to each other.

Maurice, I was wondering if you're still hunting lionfish and what the invasion is like there in the Bahamas now. Thanks, Allene

Allene, Yes, we are actively hunting lionfish and teaching locals how to safely catch, clean and eat lionfish. Some places we have under control but I have heard word of where they are still heavily populated. Tell me about the lionfish in your area. Maurice

I'm the owner/editor and have been following the lionfish invasion here since the first fish was sighted in May of 2009. The cover story for this month's issue is all about lionfish. When I first realized the enormity of the problem I went all over the Internet but found your site to be the most informative. Your blogs stopped a few months back so was wondering what was going on there. Some people here have been telling me it's a complete waste of our time to try to stop or stem the lionfish invasion. But we're plugging away at it anyway.

Allene, First of all it is not a waste of time to remove lionfish. Lionfish are fun to hunt and are the best tasting fish in the sea, better than hogfish! So in spite of the ecological disaster that they are creating, we also have a new food source. I have people calling me all the time to go on lionfish hunts. What a great excuse to get into the water. Save the earth while catching dinner. There are reefs here in the Bahamas that we have successfully removed all lionfish from. These reefs are now safe havens for other species of juvenile fish to thrive. We keep checking these reefs for lionfish and remove one or two when they move in. I believe that it is helping. Your website is great and your article is well written. Let's work together to spread the word. Maurice

Allene, primero que nada, no es una pérdida de tiempo eliminar a los peces leones. Ellos son divertidos para cazar y son el pescado más sabroso en el mar, más que el pez perro. Entonces, a pesar del desastre ecológico que están creando, tenemos un nuevo recurso alimenticio. La gente me llama en todo momento para ir a cazar peces leones. ¡Qué buena excusa para meterme en el agua! Salvar al planeta mientras cazamos la cena. On March 1, the 9th Annual BESO Auction raised over $16,000, thanks to the overwhelming support of the local community. Gratitude goes out to the Barco Hundido for providing the perfect backdrop for the third year, and to their staff that kept everyone’s thirst quenched. The crowd satiated themselves with the numerous delicious hors d'oeuvres graciously provided by local restaurants and residents. The nightclub was buzzing with excitement throughout the silent and live auctions, where attendees bid on a fantastic array of donated items. Silent auction winners took home a beautiful selection of artwork, jewelry, home furnishings and many other treasures. In the coming months, gift certificates for hotel room stays, restaurant tabs and other services will be redeemed by the highest bidders and raffle winners.

The volume level of the enthusiastic crowd cranked up during the competitive live auction, where the popular item of the evening was artist Julie Jorgensen’s gorgeous painting “Out of the Blue.” The original watercolor brought in a whopping $1,000.00 for the charity. Thanks and praise for Jerry Hedrick, of Boquete, who donated his lively auctioneer services for the first time this year.

The money raised will allow the organization to continue its important work for another year. Many deserving students will benefit from receiving scholarships, and it was announced at the auction that four sponsored students were graduating this year through their efforts and BESO assistance. For residents new to Bocas, BESO wants to spread the word that the organization counts on local folks to draw attention to where funding is most needed. With the loss of four full-time volunteers recently (who moved from the area), BESO welcomes energetic, fresh faces and is open to new ideas as to how the group can be of greater benefit to the schools and community for years to come. Meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 11:30 am at the Buena Vista Bar & Grill restaurant.

A sincere thank you once again to all who donated items, volunteered their time and attended this year’s auction. BESO’s motto continues to be that together we can make a difference, and through our joint efforts we earnestly strive to do just that. El 1ro. de marzo, la 9na. Subasta Anual de BESO juntó más de $16,000, gracias al gran apoyo de la comunidad local. Agradecemos al Barco Hundido por proveer el perfecto escenario por tercera vez y a su personal que mantuvo a los sedientos saciados. La multitud disfrutó de los numerosos y deliciosos aperitivos provistos por los restaurantes y residentes locales. El bar estaba zumbando de excitación durante las subastas silenciosas y en vivo, donde los participantes pujaron por una fantástica variedad de artículos donados. Los ganadores de la subasta silenciosa se llevaron a sus casas una hermosa selección de piezas de arte, joyas, muebles y muchos otros tesoros. En los próximos meses, certificados de regalos para estadías en hoteles, cuentas de restaurantes y otros servicios serán cambiados por los mejores postores y ganadores de rifas.

What to Do During an Earthquake
by the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency

Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur.

If Indoors:

DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.

Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.

Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.

Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, loadbearing doorway.

Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.

Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.

DO NOT use the elevators.

If Outdoors:

Stay there.

Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.

Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits and alongside exterior walls. Many of the 120 fatalities from the 1933 Long Beach earthquake occurred when people ran outside of buildings only to be killed by falling debris from collapsing walls. Ground movement during an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury. Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects.

If in a moving vehicle:

Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.

Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.

If trapped under debris:

Do not light a match.

Do not move about or kick up dust.

Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.

Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.

If near a coastal area:

Be aware that a tsunami is possible. Heed natural warnings and watch or listen for reports on the Internet, radio or television.

Utiliza una puerta como refugio sólo si está cerca de ti y si sabes que está fuertemente sostenida y soporta peso.

Quédate adentro hasta que los temblores cesen y sea seguro salir. Los estudios han demostrado que la mayoría de las lesiones ocurren cuando la gente intenta moverse a una ubicación diferente dentro de un edificio o cuando intentan salir.

La electricidad se puede ir o los sistemas de rociadores o alarmas de incendio se pueden encender.

NO uses los elevadores.

Si estás afuera:

Quédate ahí.

Aléjate de los edificios, semáforos y cables de servicios públicos.

Una vez en el exterior, quédate allí hasta que los temblores cesen. El mayor peligro está directamente fuera de los edificios, en las salidas y al lado de las paredes exteriores. Muchas de las 120 víctimas fatales del terremoto de Long Beach en 1933 ocurrieron cuando las personas corrieron fuera de los edificios y los restos de las paredes que colapsaron cayeron sobre ellos. El movimiento de la tierra durante un terremoto es rara vez la razón directa de muerte o heridas. La mayoría de las muertes en los terremotos resultan de las paredes que colapsan, los vidrios que vuelan y de los objetos que caen.

Si te encuentras en un vehículo en movimiento:

Summary of a report prepared in cooperation with the Universidad Austral de Chile, the University of Tokyo, the University of Washington, the Geological Survey of Japan, and the Pacific Tsunami Museum

The following are suggestions on how to survive a tsunami. The biggest earthquake ever recorded (Chile, 1960) created a tsunami which devastated areas of Chile, Hawaii and Japan and caused hundreds of deaths. Dozens of survivors from those areas told scientists how and why they survived while neighbors and family members did not. Because we in Bocas live in a coastal area and may experience an earthquake of large magnitude, or be subjected to the aftermath of one that took place elsewhere, please read the following and be prepared.

Although many people call tsunamis “tidal waves,” they are not related to tides but are rather a series of waves, or “wave trains,” usually caused by earthquakes. Tsunamis have also been caused by the eruption of some coastal and island volcanoes, submarine landslides, and oceanic impacts of large meteorites. Tsunami waves can become more than 30 feet high as they come into shore and can rush miles inland across low-lying areas.

Heed Natural Warnings
An earthquake may serve as a warning that a tsunami is coming, and so may a rapid fall or rise in coastal waters.

Heed Official Warnings
Play it safe, even if warnings seem ambiguous or you think the danger has passed.

Expect Many Waves
The next wave may be bigger, and the tsunami may last for hours.

Abandon Belongings
Save your life, not your possessions

Edgar Wong sent this picture of the contents of a trash bag dropped off at his store, ostensibly as recyclables. Cans of insect repellent, paint cans, vegetable tins, cardboard boxes and plastic bags do not qualify as recyclable material. What is wrong with these people?

Sand mining continues at Bluff Beach. With the road repaired, trucks can make it to and from the beach much more quickly. They are now using a backhoe to dig up the sand and often load five trucks at a time. The beach is disappearing faster than ever before. In mid-March a local hotel owner, enjoying his day off at Bluff Beach, saw the backhoe at work, and walked over to investigate. The scoop at that moment was digging through a turtle nest and he asked the driver to stop the machine. According to the hotel owner, the backhoe operator made an obscene hand gesture and continued digging. Thoroughly irate, the hotel owner pulled the workman off the backhoe and gave him a thrashing. More violence can be expected if this reprehensible sand mining is not stopped. It should have been stopped long ago.

Dear Bocas Breeze,
Regarding your latest article on Edgar Wong’s efforts at a volunteer recycling program, I feel I need to respond. Mentioned in your article was an off-the-grid hotel that, among others, had been discarding the incorrect items at his dock, causing Mr. Wong to almost halt his recycling program. Popa Paradise Beach Resort may have been that hotel and I would like to publicly apologize.

In my capacity as General Manager of this resort, one of the first things that I had to come to terms with was waste disposal. Located 35 minutes from Bocas Town, with no access to the municipal waste removal, garbage was our problem to deal with. My wife and I instituted a program of recycling and composting, slashing the amount of actual waste that we had to deal with. Using Edgar Wong’s guide (cut out of the Bocas Breeze, copied and laminated), the staff were responsible for sorting their own garbage (they live on the island with us) as well as the garbage produced by the hotel. A system of sorting, cleaning and removal was implemented and carried out.

Recently, my boat captain had the day off so I brought the recyclables in to drop off at Wongsa. Mr. Wong confronted me at the boat and justifiably reamed me out for dropping “garbage” off at his dock on several occasions. At first I was completely taken aback and reacted inappropriately as I did not have all the facts. It was later when I realized what he was so upset about, that I changed my tune.

It seems that I had made a mistake that many others have made in the past – assuming that my cultural values could easily be passed on to another, with just a little coaxing. Recycling is a new effort in Bocas del Toro and is almost unheard of in the indigenous villages, where many of our staff are from. Without a more thorough supervision, it seems that the line about what exactly should and shouldn't be recycled was muddy. When I asked my boat driver about what he thought the system was, his version was far different than what the laminated sign posted by the garbage collection area said. Through oversight by the management, we had just assumed that recycling would be easily picked up by our staff, most of whom have never recycled before in their lives. (A side note: To their credit, re-use, on the other hand, is a lesson that I have been taught by our staff time and time again, and many of us expats can reciprocally learn much from this simple principle).

Later that day, after sorting the recyclables and cleaning them sufficiently to be presented to Mr. Wong, I passed by Wongsa again. I apologized sincerely to Mr. Wong, who, as a testament to his true kindness, not only accepted my apology, but all of my recyclables as well. I also pleaded with him to continue his recycling efforts, making sure that he understood we were not taking his service for granted, yet it was a lack of supervision and proper training on my part that led to his frustrations.

I want to also take this opportunity to apologize to the great Bocas community for any concern this may have caused, when Mr. Wong temporarily halted his efforts. You can rest assured that Popa Paradise’s recycling efforts are now an example of the correct and proper techniques of recycling and will continue to be that way.

Just so that you and the rest of the community may know, Popa Paradise Beach Resort was not one of the several hotel/resorts Edgar Wong named when he complained to me of mixed garbage/recyclables drop-offs. He has taken the others to task also and the managers, like you, were unaware that their employees were not adhering to the recyling guidelines they had in place. All of those hotels/resorts are now complying. Unfortunately there are still others who are not. My advice is that all managers keep a closer eye on their staffs' recycling efforts … or be prepared to face Edgar Wong's wrath! – Allene Blaker

En relación a tu último artículo sobre los esfuerzos de Edgar Wong con su programa voluntario de reciclaje, siento que necesito responder. Se mencionó en tu artículo que un hotel autosuficiente, entre otros, ha dejado artículos incorrectos en su muelle, lo cual causó que el Sr. Wong casi interrumpiese su programa de reciclaje. Popa Paradise Beach Resort pudo haber sido ese hotel y quisiera disculparme públicamente.

Como Gerente General de este resort, una de las primeras cosas con las que tuve que conformarme fue la eliminación de basura. Ubicado a 35 minutos del pueblo de Bocas, sin acceso al vertedero municipal, la basura era nuestro problema. Mi esposa y yo instituimos un programa de reciclaje y abono, lo cual redujo drásticamente la cantidad de basura con la que teníamos que lidiar. Utilizando la guía de Edgar Wong (cortada del Bocas Breeze y plastificada), el personal era responsable de clasificar su propia basura (ellos viven en la isla con nosotros) y la que producía el hotel. Se implementó y llevó a cabo un sistema de clasificación, limpieza y eliminación.

Recientemente, el capitán de mi bote tuvo el día libre por lo que yo llevé los reciclables a Wongsa. El Sr. Wong me enfrentó en el bote y justificadamente no me permitió dejar la “basura” en su muelle en varias ocasiones. Al principio, estaba desconcertado y reaccioné inapropiadamente porque no tenía toda la información. Fue después cuando me di cuenta por qué él estaba tan molesto y cambié mi tono.

Parece que cometí un error que muchos han cometido en el pasado –al asumir que mis valores culturales podían pasarse a otros fácilmente con sólo un poco de convencimiento. It is often said that no one ever sounds so good than in a resume or an obituary. Although this is neither, nothing could be further from the truth when talking about someone like Jim Jackson. How could anyone ever adequately express, in either written or spoken words, the essence of this man and the breadth and depth of his contributions?

Like many of us, Jim fell in love with Bocas for the bounty and beauty of its nature and the serenity of its landscape. A skilled craftsman and boatman, in Bocas Jim became a grower. Although for those from California it might mean something else, in Bocas he grew kindness, hope, and much more ... focusing on organic food and bamboo products which he introduced to the community at each farmers' market.

Through disciplined and focused leadership, he coaxed a moribund cacao farm into hearty production and shaped another property into magical and tranquil spaces replete with animals, flowers, fruits and vegetables, greenhouses, paths, meditation platforms and his famous labyrinth. At his untimely passing he was beginning to direct his energy to a citrus grove and former pasture.

His relentless efforts to conserve, preserve and restore the environment are only matched by his endless kindness and concern for those around him and beyond. Our lives are more complete for having crossed paths with him. Many of us can only dream of accomplishing in our lifetime what he accomplished here in just a few years.

I find comfort in knowing that he lived in a way that was meaningful to him and he was able to do what he loved. The seeds he has planted will live forever in the landscapes that surround us and in the hearts of those fortunate to have known and loved him and his close ones.

A través de una conducción disciplinada y enfocada, logró que una finca de cacao moribunda se convirtiese en una producción abundante y transformó otra propiedad en espacios mágicos y tranquilos repletos de animales, flores, frutas y vegetales, viveros, caminos, plataformas para meditar y su famoso laberinto. En su prematura ida, había comenzado a dirigir su energía a bosques cítricos y pastizales.

Sus incesantes esfuerzos para conservar, preservar y restaurar el ambiente sólo se igualan con su continua amabilidad y preocupación por aquellos a su alrededor. Nuestras vidas son mucho más completas por haber cruzado caminos con él. Muchos de nosotros podemos soñar solamente con lograr en toda nuestra vida lo que él logró en sólo unos años de estar aquí.
